Strider SNG VS Small Sebenza 21

Don't let the Umnumzaan you handled at the shop give you the wrong impression, it is an incredibly smooth-opening knife and can even be flicked easily unlike a Sebenza. The opening motion is a bit unique (although I find it very similar to the 710 and other Benchmade knives) and the pivot needs to be set properly with loctite, not to mention most retailers don't move their CRKs very quickly so who knows how old the lube on it was.
I am a huge fan of the Umnumzaan even though before I got mine I was very skeptical of CRK. It is the rugged and cool CRK, while remaining beautiful and elegant it's stateliness is only enhanced by age and use.

If anyone knows where I can get a strider SNG ranger green in CC or stonewashed please do tell.

Grab a sebenza if you care more about aesthetics. Lots to choose from :). Either way, the two knives we're talking about are great tools and won't let you down!

scraca, I don't wish to mock you, but gl on finding a new one!
I Just bought a black stonewashed sng cc on ebay for retail price. I have searched most sites like monkey edge, plaza cutlery, knifehq etc, but all the cc's are out of stock. That being said, plaza cutlery still has 1 sng ranger free dog in stock, size and weight is comparable to the cc. That being said, I agree with what the previous posters said, in a month you'll buy a sebenza :p I bought my sebenza the 2nd of july, my sng will arrive the 4th of august :p

I'm probably in the minority here when I say that CRK is far better then a strider. Its a stronger knife and Ive never heard of blade play or CS issues with crk. Get a seb or a zaan and youll enjoy it for a lifetime.

How is the CRK stronger?

The Tanto Umnumzaan blade is .140 thick to within 3/8" or so of the tip and has 2 thick it slabs and a huge pivot. I would say its stronger overall than a Tanto SNG, which only has 1 Ti scale.

For drop point versions the SNG has more thickness near the tip than the Umnumzaan, but I would give handle strength and long term reliability (as in without needing service) to the Umnumzaan also. It's no secret that Striders have a reputation for developing blade play long term, even with the new lock up this has been reported, and that has never been an issue for CRK.

I own both knives and prefer the Tanto Umnumzaan if I know I might need lateral, prying strength from my blade. If we are talking about drop points and prying then I would grab my drop point SNG over my drop point Umnumzaan.

For normal knife use (cutting use) we all know all these knives, including the Sebenza, are plenty strong.

Not sure. Where are the Strider knuts?
Thanks for the explanation, re: stronger folder.

^^^^^^This is one aspect of it.^^^^^^^^

There is also the ti handle aspect. G10 is pretty strong stuff but, for my money, Ti is just a tougher material. Generally, metal is stronger then plastic.

Can't even find anyone with a right handed Umnumzaan in stock. Found a tanto but I don't want that blade style.

The thing you'll learn about high end knives is that often times you know exactly what knife you want, and you have the money for it, but it's just not available. You just have to be patient and keep your eyes peeled.

Interesting comments. I'm surprised people back the SnG, unless it's the new lockup model. I think ergonomically, the SnG might be better, but that's about it. Has as been mentioned, the SnG has quite a bit less blade edge than the lg. Sebenza & Umnumzaan. I can't say that the Seb is as strong as the SnG & Umnum (I never used my Sebs that hard), but I would say the Umnum's the equal of the SnG. The Umnum's stout enough & the ceramic ball/blade tang lockup makes for a long lasting folder. Also, to open the blade on an Umnum, one needs to push up & out, not straight out, like you would on most folders. Also, my broken in Umnum flicks open with a normal thumb push (Up & out, of course), so the SnG doesn't have that over the Umnum, either (along with about 1/2" less blade edge).

As to the OP asking about the DPX HEST (I assume you're talking about the 2.0 version). It's a smaller folder than the others in question, so it has a longer blade edge than the SnG. I found it to be a good knife, though I no longer have one.

If the OP is looking for a less expensive heavy duty folder, I'd recommend a ZT 0550/0551 or 0560/0561. Any one of those should be considerably less than a SnG, Seb, or Umnum. I'm not saying the ZT's the equal to those, just that they might be a possible alternative & they cost less.

Good luck with your choice.

OK I went and ordered the Umnumzaan. Took me about 3 hours to find an online retailer that confirmed that one was in stock. It took me 5 days of reading reviews and watching youtube videos to get to this point.
I am looking to find someone that has a Strider PT for trade though still.

Great choice.^
The PT will give you an idea what a Strider folder is like. I bet you will end up with an SnG too.

Good choice on the Umnumzaan. I have this knife, as well as the large and small Sebbie. If you want the look and strength of tactical for the day, carry the Umnum. For general EDC, the small or large Sebbie. Note several things here:
The Umnum blade WIDTH is 0.140."
The small and large Sebenza is 0.125"...which is a rather common blade width and entirely suitable for most knife-guys.
The NEW model 25 Sebenza, coming out soon, has a width of 0.140"...just like the Umnumzaan. Go figure.
You'll be delighted with your Umnumzaan. I know that I am. I love the slimness of the handle, the more pleasing tactical appearance of the blade, and the thicker blade-width for heavier applications if necessary.
Good luck and you made a good choice.
I've looked long and hard at Sng's also. Knife Art often has them in stock. You'll find them here on the Exchange about three times/week under Individual Knife Sales. But make certain that you get the model with the new lockup. The older ones tended toward blade-play.
