Which folder would you recomend to a a young infantry officer in the army.

Many of you prefer the SNG because of the smaller size for EDC in jeans and dress pants. However, it does not seem to be as a concern to me because I will be in ACUs most of the time and will not have to worry about blade size and sheeple as much.

I was thinking of the SMF because of that.

HOWEVER, I am of a smaller frame so maybe a SNG would be better?

I EDC a emerson CQC-11 in BDUs which has a 4 inch blade and it does not hinder my smaller hands at all.

I prefer the SMF to the SnG, and I have very small hands, the SMF to me has a more sure grip, my hand "falls" into the pocket of the handle, where as it did not on the SnG, the wide part of the SnG's handle poked my in the pad of my palm.
Besides the SMF is cooler is my opinion, and has a thicker blade.

I like the SNG but thats me, I dont care for the larger SMF because I do not need something that big in my pocket.

If I was in your position I would go with the Smf. I like the Sng a lot but for the army I would like a larger blade yet would still not become more of a nussaince to EDC.

Great handle design, basically the same for both. If you can, sure, try them both out, but I think the SMF is the winner in your position, where you want it for heavy-duty use. Of course, they are both industrial strength.

yeah, me too!

SMF will be fine in BDU's. I have smaller hands, well mediums according to glove makers. SMF feels fine, and may feel better if you wear gloves in the field.

Sam Hain. Awsome avitar. S xTx!

The only knife I have ever regretted selling is a SnG. It would do anything and was great even in khakis. It felt great in my hands(long and skinny, I have to get large gloves for the fingers to even remotely fit but the gloves are large everywhere else).

Someone has generously offered me a used SMF at a good price. That is what I am going to try next.

Oh, I had an AR once...hated it. I could have just as easily have carried a Busse AD and Glock 19. I even had it sent off to get some great custom mods but it still was way too big FOR ME.

though the size difference isnt great its enough that it makes a difference in the pocket, imho a SnG carries a lot better than an SmF, i have had a couple of both and the last SmF i had i swapped for a SnG, they just carry better and the blade length isnt much different either, but the SmF isnt too bad, but i definitely prefer the SnG.

If you widen your selections to include the CC or GG models it increases the pocketability of the SMF greatly. I have a reg SNG and a CC SMF and they feel equally as comfortable in my pocket. The CC models are a great evolution to the lineup.

I have both. For your needs I would go with the SMF. Once you get used to it you probably won't even notice it. If you are already used to the Emerson I don't think it will be to much of a change to jump to the SMF.

"Needs" in the Army is for a small sharp blade. 22 years USAR taught me big blades are dead weight, from IOBC to GTMO - and yeah, that was in the wire, no blade at all. Sure, I enjoyed carrying Gerber MKII's, Glock field knives, Bucks, Nimravus's, etc. But it all wound down to what I needed - which was a 3 1/2 inch blade max. A Swiss Army knife will do as well.

The hardest thing to open in the Army is the MRE - and it can be pulled open by hand. Everything else is icing on the cake - paracord, threads, webbing, tyraps, etc. A multitool would do better - yup, carried one of those too.

What I found is that the overall length in my right front pocket had to be short enough to keep from pushing the knife out when sitting - which happens a lot in HMMV's, folding chairs, or on your Kevlar. So, I got the SnG as it was at that max length for me. ON the LBV, you can do more - but for EDC, in garrison, bigger is not necessarily better. You have to find a balance if you want to carry the same knife daily. The overall blade length of the SnG is four inches, choil and all. That seems to work well for guys like me - 5'6" in my Rocky's. Previously I used a BM CQC 7, it worked well for carry, too.

If this was just a field use knife, I would say SMF. If you plan to include any other carry, especially off duty, SnG. It's the better overall user.

The first purchase would be a good multi tool IMO. Carried a Leatherman Wave everyday and currently just picked up a TTi to take its place.

To anyone, but ESPECIALLY someone wearing the proud uniform of this country, I'd recommend a knife that wasn't made by a man who had dishonored himself by lying about his military service record to make a name for himself in the knife making business. There are too many other good choices out there to do business with someone bereft of honor.
