Strider SNG

Well i recently bought a Sng DGG $ 500...and I feel robbed. That must be one of the most hyped blades in history. For that price you get a Sage 1, 2, a Spyderco Street Beat and an Endura...I have watched houers of reviews on Striders and all praise them as they were god send...what is so good about them I don´t get it. Yes they look cool but not $ 500 cool and yes they got a strong frame lock but com on...

Please don´t crucify me for badmouthing Striders lol.

I have always heard they are good knives but I truly don't iunderstand spending $500 right now on a production folder when you can get a better lock AND nicer looking CUSTOM knife.

Maybe someone else can point to the aspects on a Strider folder that make it a good value for them.

The SMF is what I like its just an awesome nice sized blade that looks like it has balls I prefer the SMF over the smaller SNG.

I definitely prefer the SMF over the SnG. I love the DGG model. It carries thin in your pocket but has excellent grip and plenty of blade. I had an SnG Lego grip that I really liked too. Buying a slightly used one is a cheaper way to find out if they're for you. If you don't like it, resell it. If you watch the for sale section for a little while you can get a good deal.

i definitely prefer the SnG to the SmF, imho the SmF is just enough bigger to not carry as well, for me anyway, imho the SnG is one of the very best edc folders around and the cutting edge of the SnG and SmF is almost the same anyway, hardly enough difference between the 2 to matter, or make one "emasculated" lol. i have had 3 or 4 SnG's, 2 SmF's, 2 AR's and a GB and of those the SnG with black G10 and digi finish was my fav by far, as far as looks, ease of carry, cutting ability for size, you name it the SnG was my favorite.

that said i would still get a hinderer '18. that demko looks good too, personally i edc a custom emerson '13, it just depends on what ya want though, what ya like, its all subjective.

One thing I can agree with, that Demko folder is a helluva deal. That's why I have one on order:thumbup:. Regarding Striders and value, it should be pretty obvious that it's highly subjective. People like different things to different degrees. To assume that one's subjective values should somehow be the standard for everyone else is pretty narrow minded. Please note I'm not making any accusations of course.

There may be some objective, universal standard of values for us as humans, but one thing's for sure, it won't pertain to pocket knife features in any concrete sense.

IMO, Strider put together a folder design that is unique to the knife industry. It went Classic immediately. And, as time has revealed, the design is as tough as nails.

If you're getting a new SNG remember here is approx a 1 week break in peroid. A NIB one will come stiff and gritty. I've got a regular SNG and A SNG CC . The one thing I do'nt like is the pocket clip placement. The bend of the clip is right above the outside intregal lock cutout. This causes the folder to get caught on the lip of my jeans pocket almost all the time. If it were'nt for the SNG being difficult to pull out of my back pocket it would see much more EDC time.
The SNG has a lot of things going for it, kinda light weight, feels great in the hand, nice flat ground, etc. Strider now has a 3/4 grind for those who want more strength though I think the original flat grind is plenty strong. I would buy one from a reputable place like True North Knives. My Striders did'nt have any problems but I have read quite a few posts about people who were'nt satisified.

yeah ya gotta bend the clip up some (to loosen it, depending on what kinda pants ya wear/etc) and kinda twist it when ya take it outta the pocket, but yes i feel ya and have had the same happen to me, i have had some whcich did need a bit of break-in, others which didnt, seemed like the older ones were grittier at 1st, maybe, a bit, the last one i had, a '08 or '09 SnG, was as close to perfect as could be(esp for a SKI), none of the usual little scuffs and such SKI is known for, F&F was really quite good.

Please don't mind my ignorance. I just received my ZT-301 - new - for <$200 delivered. I am really impressed with this Strider design produced essentially by Kershaw. Which Strider made model is similar - and - in what ways is it better than the ZT? What is the list price?

I must admit, after fondling William Henrys, too pretty for me, and C. Reeves knives, handsomely done users - especially the Sebby - I have a standard for basic folders. I was able, at least for a while, to satisfy my Sebby desires with a similar Buck 172 Mayo TNT. The Sebbie is a notch above the TNT - is this the case with The Strider/ZT - or are they closer? I am impressed by quality - not brands. Thanks... flame retardent suit is downstairs, so be kind!

i think they look a lot neater than a ZT lol..................

really, ZT is pretty good, i dont know that SKI is really "better" than a ZT, ZT has never really "grabbed" me though, none of them, but nothing wrong with 'em.

IIRC none of the SKI line looks much like any ZT's.

now the entry level ZT's, the SKI probably maybe might have a bit better lock, but really, barring that, it just depends on what ya like, what ya want, and what ya can afford to spend, its like comparing rolex to seiko, both will tell time pretty reliably, both are pretty rugged, is the rolex at $7K really better than a $150 seiko? not really, but rolex easily sells every single watch they make every yr, so to some folks it is better.

Bought a new Strider SnG CC about 3 weeks ago....been flicking it, spider dropping it, opening/closing it like a madman. Great fun, but these knives definitely are too hyped when it comes to durability. The lock bar face "molded" itself right off the blade tang, so now it feels insecure when "locked". Also the ball detent seems to have already worn down....the blade wiggles when closed. I still feel it's a "good" knife, just not worth $475.

I recieved a bad knife from strider, the CS experience(when trying to get the defective fixed) I got can best be described as a nightmare, they wouldn't return emails or phone messages, they told me they fixed everything and they hadn't, I learned my lesson.

SIFU1A can you tell me what you are refering to when you mention "SKI" ? I have'nt heard of it.

Lycosa hit the nail on the head. The folders are a great design that is one of the best in the industry (argueably). I'm not sure where you are seeing them for $500, but that is close to full MSRP. They can be found for about $250-$350 on the Exchange here once in a while.

I have seen some custom knives that aren't anywhere near perfect. Including uneven grind lines, bad heat treat, sloppy F&F. Not all are like this, but it can and does happen occassionally. Nothing is perfect. Also, waiting 6-12 months for a custom knife may be tougher for someone that has money burning a hole in their pocket.

For the most part, the design is what I think draws people. In addition, the collectability of the knife is another aspect. The 2 Striders I have are just about perfect, solid early lock up, even grind lines, the blades are centered, and there is a strong blade detent.

How about indestructibility, and the comfort that should you manage a way to do that, it doesn't matter?

There is a difference between Strider and Custom knives for sure, but as another one posted not all customs are good and for the price of some customs the Striders would be a better value.

That's my Custom Demko that you are talking about and it is perfect in every way, Andrew Demko knows how to make knives and do it right. :D

Back to Strider, IMO they make the best designed Frame Lock on the market and in my personal experience the F&F is excellent as is the durability. The only thing I really wish they would change is to get away from S30V and use a better steel as I am not a fan of S30V.

thats not typical of SKI, send it in and let them fix the thing...........
