Strider "Tactical" AR questions...

Hi all.

I'm eventually going to get a Strider GB, and stopped by tadgear.com just now, where I found the new "Tactical" AR. http://www.tadgear.com/edged tools/strider-tadg_ar-tactical.htm

I NEED ONE!!!

Questions:

-First and foremost, since the spine of the blade is sharpened, HOW THE HECK are you supposed to carry it without getting your hand and everything around the blade cut to shreds?

Here is a pic of a "Standard" AR both open and closed: http://www.tadgear.com/edged tools/strider_ar.htm

So you can clearly see how the sharpened edge would probably be VERY tricky to handle, unless there's something I'm not seeing.

-Are they going to be making a "Tactical" GB?

-Any idea what the price may be?

Thank you!
Drjones

First, Dr. Jones, welcome back, i havent seen you posting in a while, unless i somehow missed them. I too took a break when "life" happened and stole much of my free time.

OK, to answer your question, i could very well be wrong, but, i recently handled a few Strider fixed blades, a few had the top sharpened, but, while it was sharpened, it was not all that sharp, not really sharp enough to worry about cutting yourself or clothing. I assume that with the AR, its the same thing, yes, its sharpened, but not all that sharp. The bottom cutting edge is, of course, razor sharp, so its almost as if the sharpening on the top isnt to allow that edge to cut, maybe its just to make the profile a little more streamlined.

I just picked up an AR here in BF, had to send it in for a minor problem, cant wait to get it back, it is a MONSTER of a folder. You should also check out the new SnG folders, theyre just as strong as the AR/GB, but of much more practical size for carry.

Thank you for the welcome, sir! Actually, what happened is that last summer I bought my first two guns. (Blued Beretta 96 and Mossberg Mod. 88 pump 12ga.)

Since then, I've been spending most all my online time at TFL, until it closed, and now at www.thehighroad.org , its successor.

I suggest you check out THR as well!

Thank you for your explanation: that clears things up.

I checked out the Sng, but I am just SO enamored with that finish on the Tactical AR!!! :D

Hello all,

I'm still quite new to this forum and by no means am an expert in the design/application of knives...but what first came to mind when I read your question drjones, was the possible use a sheath (instead of clip)? Like you said, with both edges sharpened, that would pose quite a problem...especially in a folder?

That was just my thought on the subject. I'm still learning...and thanks to this forum, I'm discovering so many different ideas/concepts that I think amazing!

Thanks

Yeah, i was disappointed when TFL closed, but THR seems to have taken its place reasonably well.

So, you went and bought a Beretta pistol, i now recall that i used to tease you mercilessly for your fondness of Berettas, and i hope youll understand if i continue now that you have one. :) So, has the slide come off and nailed you in the forehead yet? :) (Just kidding, mostly :)

To quote Tommy Lee Jones in a movie i cant remember the title of: "Get yourself a Glock, and lose the nickle-plated sissy pistol..." :) Glad youre back! :D Do you "feel the love" ? :)

When you say you like the finish on the AR, are you talking about the tiger stripes on the blade? If so, you CAN get an SnG with those exact same stripes, but it will have to be one of the first run SnG's, which can be found occasionally for sale by individuals. I have 2 of the first run, a tanto and spearpoint, but im taking them to my grave... :) The newer stonewashed SnG's are nice too though and make excellent users since the stonewashed finish on the handle and blade hide any scratches perfectly.

One thing though, i dont know if you have actually handled an AR/GB in person, but you need to know, these are GIGANTIC folders! Many feel theyre just too big to make a practical carry knife, true, i dont, but im a very large person. So keep that in mind. The SnG is of much more practical size, and equally strong IMO.

Hello sere.

You really should check out the sites in my sig! You'd enjoy them.

Anyhow, I also thought of just using a sheath/pouch, but I don't want to.

I want to just be able to clip the knive anywhere, or just toss it in a pocket/bag without having to worry about it, not to mention worrying about handling it! (Assuming the top edge is sharp)

I think a more probable explanation is what megalobyte said: the top "edge" is probably just a false edge, for looks only.

Thanks!
Drjones

Well DJ, as i said, im just speculating because i just dont know for sure, but you need a definite answer, so, call Strider and ask, thats the only way to find out for sure.

No, the slide hasn't smacked me....yet... ;)

I think that movie is "US Marshalls" which was basically a remake of "The Fugitive", but whatever....

And you'll be happy to know that I have bought a G30 and 27!

As well as a Stainless Beretta 96 to complement the blued one! :p :D

Glad youre back! :D Do you "feel the love" ? :)
Thank you! I actually have stopped by on occasion in the last few months. It also bears mentioning that I first learned of TFL HERE! Thank you for that!!!

Dude, have you seen the links in my initial post? The "Tactical" AR has a totally different, and AWESOME stripe pattern! Check it out!!! Nothing like the current "tiger stripes."

No, I haven't handled one in person, unfortunately....

But you do have a good point....

Anyhow, I shouldn't be spending money anyway, but that Tactical AR is just sooooooo sweet, and knowing its a limited run is driving me NUTS!!!!

Any chance the Strider guys would custom-make me one with that pattern??? Pretty pretty please??? :D

drjones,

Thanks for the info on those other sites...i'll have to check them out later tonight.

I completely understand what you're saying about just being able to keep the knife in your pocket or bag and not have to worry about damaging anything or deploying it from a sheath if you're in an emergancy situation (hopefully being a rare, if not, non-existant circumstance!).

I would hope that the probable explanation is just a "false edge"...but when I looked at the pic closely again, that top edge sure looks sharp! But I TRY not to let appearances fool me...too much!

Anyway thanks again for the info and the welcoming discussion.
