hey guys

i have really been jonesing for a new blade as of late and i am trying to figure out what to purchase

my background - medical school student & EMT, not looking for a SAR knife at all, but rather, a good all around tactical folding blade for self defense purposes

i work at night and i usually walk back home, so something with a 3.5-4 inch blade, good grips and reliable

i currently EDC between:

strider sng 3/4 grind with coyote scales
hinderer 3.5 gen 3 xm-18 non filp / blue or black scale
benchmade 940 osbourne s30v

i have been looking at:

1. Strider SMF CC

2. Jim Burke Rockstar

3. Emerson - CQC 15 ferrk'd

well what's your opinion on the knives that you already have? that'd probably help in deciding which knife to recommend; what do you like about each knife you already have?

Not trying to turn this into a prac tac discussion but how about boxing or martial arts lessons and a good pair of running shoes as I'd imagine it would be pretty hard to complete your doctoral studies from an 8x8. If you insist on a self-defense knife though I'd go with the Emerson as it would be less of a loss than the other two if you ever used it. Depending on your area though I'd choose a weapon less likely to get me charged with attempted murder though, O.C. or a Kubaton/ Mini-Mag can give you a good one up and are a bit more court defensible .

I think they are all winners. I tend to like the grip you get on the Emerson and Striders. The Burke Rockstar is a great folder but I find the all ti handle to not be as grippy in some situations.

I wouldn't consider the Rockstar as suitable for self defence. Its more of an EDC/utility knife... it would work in a pinch, but there are better options.

I would take a good look at the Emerson CQC-13 - the more I carry it the more I consider it to be one of Emersons most successful designs.

Otherwise out of the Emersons the CQC-8, CQC-11, CQC-12 and CQC-15 would all do the trick.

Consider also Spyderco's Chinook, also designed for self-defence but quite useful around the BBQ as well. ;)

I was looking for a mini CQC-15 and during the research i found a lot of bad things about Emersons, so I will never look at them again until I read a lot of good things.

Just buy another Strider, can't go wrong.

Self defense classes and pepper spray might be a more effective combination for saving your ass. Pepper spray has reach and is less likely to get you in trouble if you need to use it. You can always keep a knife on you as well as a last ditch tool. As long as a knife has a reliable lock and a good grip, they're all about the same. A nicely placed .22 is just as good as a .357. If I had to pick, I'd probably go with the Emerson since it's the cheapest but just as reliable.

Can't beat a waved knife. The CQC13 is a good "stock" Emerson as it has the thickest production liners and a grip with a good pinky hook. Any other Emerson's, I'd have framelocked by either Ferrrk or Reese Weiland.

hard to beat the wave for self defense

Hard to beat a gun for self defense, I wouldn't but a knife EDC decision on the fact it has a wave and it's "tacticool" so I can slash someone with it quicker.

i would go out on a limb here and say i have most defintely eliminated the rockstar out of the list

i do not like tip up carry at all, and it cant be switched!!!

so now let me ask you

1. Strider SMF - cc

2. Emerson HD-7 ferrkd

If you don't like tip up, then the Emerson and Strider are out too :(

Go for a Spyderco Military:

-Reliable lock
-4" blade
-Tip down
-Comes from a company that backs their product.

I second the Military. Try to get one with orange handle so it doesn't "look" like a "weapon".

Ferrk is not taking any new orders right now. What type of work would you have him do to an Emerson HD-7 since it is already a framelock?

Solid advice. If you want speed and solid dependability, an Emerson should do nicely. All of the choices you mentioned are excellent however and you should handle before you buy, if possible.

Haha, lol... You'd be surprised what could go wrong with a Strider, but hey! I like them too, at least... for now. Don't be so quick to dismiss Emerson. I hope that idiot who did the YouTube Emerson (comparison) video, didn't negatively influence you. He's seems to have impressed a number of folks and it's a shame. He's a moron finding small and neglible faults, and magnifying them way out of proportion.

So you found a lot of bad things doing research? In other words, you have no real hands-on, direct experience with Emerson? Reading is how you make up your mind? OK. Read more. There's a lot of honest and enthusiastic support for Emerson if you know where to look. Read this... (IMO) Emerson make a fine robust quality knife. Their customer support is excellent. I'd say 2nd to none, but I'd say the same about Benchmade or CRK. IMO Strider make a great knife, but they're still fine-tuning themselves as a real company.

I mean this all in good spirit, but however you take it is fine. Unless you have direct, real hands-on experience of a product, don't be so swayed. Buy a knife. Experience it yourself, if not in actual use... at least how it feels. Don't like it? It can always be returned (in most cases).
