Strider vs. Buck/Strider Tarani.

Finally got to see and handle a Strider first hand at Blade West. It was a nice knife, but what I bought was the ATS34 Buck-Strider Tarani. The reason being that I didn't see enough additional quality to justify the $250 price difference. Sure, the Strider was a framelock vs Buck's liner lock, but I expect the collaboration will be plenty strong enough for me. What do you folks think?

I think if it makes you happy then you did the right thing. Buck has a great warranty and the knife is a good one so I'm sure it will be fine.

I would really like to see Cliff do a side by side review of the SnG and a Buck/Strider Tarani, I think that would be very interesting.

The Buck Strider is fine. You won't be disappointed. If it's not the 420HC one...I'm not a big fan of 420HC...

i recently baught ATS34 Buck-Strider Tarani model 882... not bad, but i found the Buck's liner lock to be a bit "agressive" and paintfull to the finger at the end.. :(
let me know if you feel the same...

I have one and agree about the liner. I filed the sharp edges on the thumb serrations down a little bit and now it feels/works perfect.

You'll probably adjust to the liner in a few weeks. Or the liner will adjust to you. Hard to say which happens. Was the same way with my M16.

the Tarani is a great folder for the money. it's essentially the same "footprint" as the SNG. it's pretty beefy for a production folder. i own an 882 PE as well as an SnG. in my opinion the SnG is EASILY worth the extra $250. its lock is much stouter and is manufacturered to a much higher standard. but in the end, you have to decide if you have a place for a $400 folder.

Yes, it is a bit stiff, and the edges are certainly noticeable. Filing is a good idea - I may do that too.

The only thing I didn't like about it was that it was about as sharp as a butter knife out of the box...

No, I went for the ATS34 blade, G10 scales. Not sure about the liners though - they may be HC.

The thing is, if I'm going to spend $400 for a folder, I'd rather go a little more and get a handmade. I was really looking hard at Pete Marzitelli's knives; couldn't do it this time though.

I was looking at a Buck/Strider just yesterday, I did not like the thin liner lock and I would never buy a knife made of 420HC

Kickaha, great purchase. I use a G-10/ATS34 882 for every situation where there is a possibility of losing my numbered custom SNG or SMF. This is usually while boating and swimming, and when travelling. I'd leave the thing alone as far as modifications, and keep in mind the liners are stainless stell and not Ti, they don't have to be super thick for the same type of performance.

Jeez! The Distinctive Edge has the ATS-34 Tarani on sale for $95, right after I gave $150 for it at Blade West!  :(

I saw one go for $45 on Ebay and another on the KF for the same price just recently. You can beat both those prices if you look around on that one.

G-10 or not, that is an unbelievable deal on an ATS-34 model:) While that might be found (or near there) every so often, that is more of a "lucked into on someone's part". Good for whomever grabbed it.

I recently just bought an ATS-34/G-10 version on the new market for about $115. Bought the knife for a cousin of mine getting ready to do the normal U.S. Army deployment cycle. I thumbed it ope when it came and I find very little to be lacking in what I'd want out of a liner lock in that price range. Compares favorably (ergonomics, etc) against my SnG version 3. Besides being surprised, he's definitely going to enjoy such a nice production.

Kickaha,

Sorry to hear yours didn't come sharp? The one I purchased didn't come "Spyderco sharp", but it did shave the arm hair. Hopefully (for others), you were just unlucky versus my being lucky in that regard.

did you find one with Plain edge AND G-10/ATS34 ?
because i don't like SS edge and managed to find PE but only "plastic" handle
Shape of the blade is nice, but i don't like the "sand-paper" finish of the upper part of the blade... i think i will polish it on day ! :D
