Strider WP vs. Livesay Woo/Celt?
Merry Christmas, forumites!

I'm looking for a small fixed blade to carry at work and I've pared the list down to the following contenders:

- Livesay Woo, Celt, G-45, or Marshal
- Strider WP, MFS, or Buck Solution
- TOPS Sea Wolfe or Interceptor

Okay, so it's not really pared down that much. But what I'm really concerned about is their sizes relative to each other. Are Livesay's neck knives that much smaller than the Strider WP? I want something that will fill my hand like a medium/large folder (EDC, KFF size)but will still be concealed easily. If the Livesay knives are similar to the Arclite, they won't do.

On the other hand, the Strider/TOPS knives may be too bulky. I'd prefer a wharncliffe, but the size will be the deciding factor. Since these knives are never available in local knife/gun shops, I can't handle them myself. So it's up to you forumites! Go get help, Lassie!

Thanks in advance and Happy Holidays,
Butch

if it were me id probably go with the WP. i have one already as well as the MFS and ive handled sea wolf and interceptor series. The WP is a great knife, its compact but the handle is long enough to fill your hands, and its tough as hell. Whenever im goin to work i almost always reach for that as my fixed blade. Its .25" thick but you dont really notice it because its only a single wrap of paracord. i wear untucked tshirts to work and you can't see it at all. The TOPS knives are just as thick if not thicker with their micarta handles.

another thing also the sheath of the WP (and any other strider for that matter) is waaaay better then the ones that come with the TOPS knives, the sea wolf sheath has a permanently mounted steel clip that is absolutely useless, so if your gonna get a tops be prepared to invest in a decent sheath. other than that theyre fairly decent knives, not my favorite steel(1095) but still not bad. I dont know much about the livesays so i cant comment on them

but trust me, if you get the WP or any other strider, you wont be dissapointed.

Thanks for the info. I assumed ahead of time that I'd get an after-market sheath anyway, but if the one that comes with it is good, even better.

Know anything about Livesay's knives? Are they the same size as the WP? The reason I'm curious is that it's about 1/6th of the price.

While I've never seen a WP in real life I've got a Woo. I really like the woo and it's got a really nice sheath. I've worn the woo quite a bit and it's comfortable while wearing under BDU's.

If you just want a neck knife that's not prety, warm or comfey but extremly pointy and sharp the woo is what you need. I'll never feel naked wearing my woo!!!

PS......when over in the UAE I wore it 24/7 and even wore it in the showers as we had TCN's (escorted) running all over the place. It just took a little breakfree after the shower and she was better than new.

If I wanted pretty, I'd wear a Christmas wreath around my neck! ;)

I pretty much want it for a "test run." I want to see if a small, sturdy fixed blade would be a comfortable enough carry to ditch the large/small folder combo I truck around with me.

Funny you should mention UAE. A friend of mine just regaled me with stories of spending Christmas there almost a decade ago. Although while most of his "co-workers" were roughing it, he was staying in a hotel.

I really like my woo, and would not hesatate to use it as designed. For my money it's a excellent use/abuse knife and if needed can be disposed of after cutting some rotten meat!

Wore it downtown everytime we went (we were in Charlie) along with a Livesay custom Air Assualt IWB.

Was in the UAE this time last year, living in tents and using a gang shower:barf: :barf: Only "good" thing was you could have 2 beers every weekend. You would not believe how drunk people got after only "2" beers. We had a thermal camara overwatching the pool/party area and WOOO HOOOO what we saw would make excellent stories for Penthouse:D :D :D

you also have to deal with the matter that resharpening of the WOO is close to impossible. and all of the Livesay are very rough finished.

otherwise Livesay knives are great for the money and use.

Merry Christmas and have a knife night.

I think I'll go with Livesay. The price point is so much better. Anyone know how long it takes him to fill an order?

Shrike, the term "gang shower" gives me chills. My friend was in logistics in the Navy during the Gulf war, so he got to say at a Hilton downtown. I was never in the service myself, but I played Cat Chaser in my childhood in the Philippines ;)

Thanks for taking the time on Christmas eve!

I'll tell you what the biggest differnece is between all the knives you mention. A Strider is made from ATS-34 or BG-42 in the case of my AR. My Model BT is ATS-34. Never have I seen a hint of rust. The other knives you listed are made from that 1095 crap steel that rusts out from under you in ANY hard use environment. I had a few TOPS knives and some got left in my truck for a few weeks they were not unclean in any way well oiled to start out but when I go to use one the fu****king edge is so rusted out it would not cut sh****t So I will tell you right now get the STRIDER a few more dollars will be well worth it in the long run. If your like me you buy that WP or take a look at the EB series of fixed blades by Strider I have carried my EB-LT now for weeks to work and other areas with no problems at all.

Trust me from a guy that uses his knives daily GET THE STRIDER I have sold off asll my other knives that I thought were hard core but were cheap. Now all I carry are Striders so I guess I am lucky in that regard. If I only knew it back when I was 19 I would be all set.

I know I'll probably get Strider in the long run, but the price of the Livesay knives (and their rep) has me going in that direction for now. I think I spent a small fortune on Christmas presents, so a cheap fix would do for the short term. Besides, maybe by that time TOPS will have switched to ATS-34 or whatever steel they're going to use in the future.

I'm also afraid of getting bit by the Strider bug. I think their lower-end line (MFS, WP, Buck collabs) will just be the start of a long, beautiful relationship with Strider for the hard-use part of my collection. Followed by Weiland/Duncan knives for show, Benchmade knives for low periods...oh God, when will it stop...

Merry Christmas, everyone. I hope you and yours have a fun, safe holiday season to remember.

Atomic Zero, just in case you have not visited Newt's sites here they are. Newts Forum Newts Web Site Go back through his forums, their is lots of excellent info.

strider4112, Newts knives are made out of 1095, but before you go calling it crap you might just want to research that steel a tad. Besides not everybody in the military or Law enforcement can afford a Strider. Newts knives are excellent for the money (you can not get a better blade for his prices) and you might just be a tad suprized at who chooses to use his knives :D :D

I've visited Newt's site several times. I think mostly for that animation for his "Atta Boys."

I've never had 1095 in hand, but the overall view of it seems positive for hard use. Most of the complaints are similar to strider's, so I'll be cautious in care.

Air Assault My AA is missing (was not made with one) the top thumb rest. The AA is a really good basic blade that will last forever with some simple care.

That's one beefy-looking neck knife. Seems to carry well, though.

Does Newt have a waiting period when you order? And does me make customs, or is he strictly a "small shop" guy?

Ho ho ho!

Anybody mention one of these?

Holy poop on a stick, that just might be perfect. That and the Wharncliffe WP would be a helluva combination.

I just went to TAD earlier this evening and didn't see it. Thanks for the link. Hmm, wonder how I missed it.

I bought one of the WP2's from TAD like in the picture "Reed" posted and this thing is sweet. Its small but its all Strider.

Atomic Zero,
I just have the link in my history, I am not sure whether they still have them, email Josh, Evan or Pat and they will let you know.

Like Strider 4112 says, 1095 rusts. And ATS34 is more stainless and more rust resistant. So if you cant bother to oil your knife at the end of the day go ahead and pay a lot more for the strider. If your like most of us and actually oil your knife when your done at the end of the day, then 1095 is just fine. We all don't make our living sticking our blades in rag heads all day and then leaving them rust in the truck for days on end, so the edge rusts off. Stiders are a great knife. I would buy a strider, if its what I wanted regardless of price. But if its just day to day cutting we are talking about, not prying, the dirty truth is old 1095 cuts just the same and sharpens quicker and easier. Rusts easier and does not hold the edge as long though. Buy a Woo for day to day and the Strider for when the black helicopters come. Also its not a great idea to ask if a strider or livesay is better on the strider forum, if an objective answers is desired. ;-)

I know, I just wanted to get as much coverage as possible ;)

Regardless, I got the information I needed to make a decision. A Strider is definitely in my future, but it's going to be a Livesay for now. His knives seem to be of a very high quality and at this point the price/performance of a Livesay knife makes much more sense. Striders may be prettier, but my first qualification is quality.

Besides, I don't think my job qualifies me as a "hard core operator." I think I can find the time to mend my blades during that 3:30 coffee break. As long as it doesn't cut into my Simpsons time, I'll be fine.
