Striders - SMF CPM 3v or SNG in S110V

So I'm thinking...just thinking about getting a nice beefy blade and of course, Strider seems to be a good albeit expensive option. I know S30V is a good steel, but I get a kick out of getting the more "premium" steels. I'm just like that and I guess that's why some of us are here.

Anyway, I've noticed that there are a handful of SNG's out there with S110V and a reasonable number of SMFs w/ CPM 3V blades around. I'd love a SMF with S110V , but if that does not materialize, what are your opinions of the SMF in 3V or the SNG in S110V?

I can EDC either and carry in the IWB, SOB (about 4 o'clock in the waistband). From a cutting point of view, is there a big difference between the 2 steels?

Thanks in advance and I'd love to especially hear from you if you have 1st hand experience with either or both steels and/or models.

S110V will hold an edge longer while 3V will be tougher and easier to sharpen.

It will come down to size I would think, SmF vs SnG, get the one that fits you better.

Sng should be large enough for most tasks and the s110v will be better for pocket knives while the 3v would be better suited toa large fixed blade imho, an SnG with the s110v seems like it would be a dream edc knife.

110v is the longer cutter of the two but realize that 3v will out do s30 by 25 to 30%. i would say that 110v would be my choice for a really abrasion resistant alloy. anything over 5 in. i would prefer 3v.--dennis

You 2 make these decisions dangerously easy. Now, to find an extra $550 laying around ;)

I would rather have an SMF in 110V ;) Since Ankerson scooped up the only one I would have bought in 3V :D

Yes to that AFAIK. There was a small number of SMFs and SnGs in S110V. They did not last long.

Same here. As far as I know, NO ONE has any SnG in S110V anymore, so I'd love to know where the OP has seen some...

Howdy folks. There is an SNG in S110v in the trade forums. Did they make many SMFs in S110V that aren't custom (cuz there is on in the Exchange forum for that as well)? No I'm not plugging those sellers but it is there for all to see if you really want this blade. I understand the SNG is big enough for EDC, but when talking about blades, when is enough really enough? I would guess either the law dictates what you carry or the length of your leg will dictate how much blade you'll have on you.

If I run into any other SNG in S110V and I decide I don't want it, I'll let you all know.

So I'm still debating...SnG in S110V for the ultimate EDC or SMF in 3V for the ultimate in toughness. Either will likely gather lint in my pocket, dust in my drawer and/or mainly get worn from me sharpening to to wow people with as I cut various things. Yes I'm being honest and don't claim to be LEO or Military.

If strider's 3V is S3V, then it stains. If you like a clean looking blade, don't go for S3V.

The S110V blades are tiger striped and the 3V blades are Black Oxide coated so it won't make any difference. ;)

The name for the steel actually is just 3V, not S3V. The 'S' in a Crucible steel's name is used by the company to designate a stainless steel (S30V, S110V, etc.). :)

Regardless, like Jim said, the 3V blades are coated, so it's not much of a concern.

You don't need to be Military, LEO, or First Responder to own a great cutting tool. You only need things to have things that require cutting.

With really rare exceptions, the S110v SMFs were TS but the S110V SnGs were BO.

I believe TNK will be releasing S110V SMF's on an ongoing basis. It is a collab type of offering from that specific seller.

I put myself on the TNK e-mail notification list when the first batch of Strider SmF with S110V hit their website and disappeared within a day or so.

I received an e-mail from Neil at TNK some number of weeks later telling me he had a box from Strider that had some S110V knives in it and he would be posting them on his website over that weekend.

He posted them that Saturday in the afternoon. I believe he got 4 SmF's with S110V steel in.

That is batch number 2, so it might be that he may get some more, in limited numbers.

So - if you want one I would recommend signing up for e-mail notification.

I have been using my SmF with S110V steel since receiving it last Tuesday - cutting everything I can get my hands on, and there seems to be no noticeable edge deterioration yet.

Last night I cut more wood, some plastic, and a diet coke can. I can't wait to try to sharpen this stuff.

There's no doubt in my mind that with my normal to moderate usage I can go a long time before having to touch it up.

S110V isn't that bad to sharpen, reprofiling is what takes the effort.

Don't let it get too dull though.

Jim - what do you recommend I use on this thing to touch up the edge?

I only have one diamond rod, and it's a freehand deal.

My Sharpmaker has the ceramic - but I read somewhere that the S110V is actually harder than the ceramic.

I haven't tried anything yet.

Even the hardest steels aren't anywhere near as hard as the ceramic on sharpening stones, so the Sharpmaker should be fine for a touch-up.
