What are the best? If I am going to build this match case - I want to base my specs on the best. I know Ohio Blue Tip were awesome thanks to phosphorus - but they have been banned.

Are Diamond worth a damn? Are there any place to find the Ohio's?

Help?

The best survival match I know of is the REI Storm match. Better than all the strike anywhere as well as the lifeboat matches. If you are building a match case, the REI Storm matches are quite a bit larger so you will need to size your match case accordingly. Good luck.

Go for a BIC lighter and a Ferro Rod...You could Never be able to to beat that combo for size/space and use in all clime's
But if you want Matches go for the Peleny[SP] brand and even then Pick the ones by the White head's that are larger.

the only brand out there is called henley or maybe penley. do a google. there's like 3 places that carry them.

ps....try ebay and search for : strike anywhere matches. (diamond brand)

Even though I have some matches in my bug out bag (found here: http://www.rangerjoes.com/survival-matches-p-383.html), I would recommend you instead get a lighter as a back up to a good Swedish fire steel (such as one found here: http://www.campingsurvival.com/swfiar.html). Concerning the lighter, I would go with a Windmill Trekker Storm-proof Lighter (found here: http://www.bestglide.com/windmill_trekker.html). You can’t go wrong with having these three in your pack. I would use the fire steel mainly, and the lighter for when you are either tired, it is dark, or whatever… and the matches as a last resort. You should keep at least one of these on your body at all times (not in a butt-pack or some bag); in case you have to escape a life threatening situation.

Thinking in the same vein, any tool you think is detrimental to GREATLY keeping you alive, such as a fire tool and knife (and/or multi-tool?) you should keep it on your body securely. Either have it tightly attached in some way, shape, or form (close and not dangling) or in a pocket with ALL buttons ALWAYS fixed securely.

Just rambling. :o)

Why are you guys recommending a lighter to a guy who is looking for the best match to put in a match-case, geez:confused:

I think my match case would be a bit big if I had to make it for a lighter! ;)

Thanks for the suggestions - I am looking for strike anywhere - and the REI's and the others need to have a strike on case.

I hate that the GOVT has outlawed shipping with anything but a hazmat label strike anywhere matches.

THANKS! HEre is the link:

and here is a spec sheet:

It is PERFECT!

DOUBLE EDIT:

Except that you can't find them. Sheesh. Swan is another company that makes them. I will just have to hunt around. There is a 26.00 Hazmat fee to ship these anywhere. Dear god...

When? They reclassified them as hazardous, so most shipping companies don't like to carry them, but have they actually been outlawed????

I use Diamond brand, never had a problem with them. Local farm stores carry Ohio brand, with the blue tip but I don't care for them as much.

Okay - my bad. Let me ammend - and I will adjust my regular post.

They have banned shipping them anywhere but ground and must have a hazmat label on them.

Sorry - I should have been more clean.

I have read many good reviews of REI storm matches if you want to carry something that is waterproof and not too expensive.
I have not tried them yet but I will be picking some up today.

TF, in answer to your original question, I have found the Diamonds to work well, but only in the larger KITCHEN model. The penny size break easily and the white tip is sometimes too small to get a good strike on anything but the box.

The Blue Tip's are no longer made, but as said above, you may still be able to find some stock. If you do find them, they may work well, or they may not if they've not been protected from humidity somewhat. If you find them, they have probably been sitting around since at least the 80's somewhere. A bit of off topic trivia, they actually have a festival themed around the old Blue Tips in Wadsworth that is interesting: http://www.bluetipfestival.com/BT8%20History.htm

Use Blue diamond brand for years as well. Never had a problem, and plan to use them for years to come. Cheap, and readily available. Just bought a huge pack at my local grocery store last week.

Oops... you said matches... sorry about that, well maybe somebody can use a fire starter.

I use the Solo Scientific... awesome! Produces lots and lots of hot spark.

There's a nice little video in the link

I agree, its amazing. How do bic lighters and sparking devices answer the guys question? :thumbdn:

I have had a hard time finding strike anywhere matches in my area too. The store I have bought them at before went out of buisness.

I still see them at the grocery store for like $1.50. The Diamond ones have always worked great for me. For my matchsafe, I pick out ones that had the most strike material on the head.

Okay - I picked up two boxes of Blue Diamond matches - they WERE a little hard to find. Testing shows that my knurling is a little deep. About every 10th match gets eaten up...

So - I will make that a little more shallow.

I also ordered one of those Aurora's above. I will check that out.

The goal is to combine the two - match case and Aurora.

The REI stormproof matches are NOT strike anywhere. They include two extra striking surfaces with each box (in addition to the two ON each box) though. You could glue a piece of the striker to the inside lid of a case, but you would not be able to strike them on knurling.

Which is a shame, because they are far superior in a wilderness setting.

I do the same thing T. Takes awhile, but I pick out the ones with the most white at the end. Seems about 1/4 of the matches out of a large box comes with less white material, and those are normally the ones that have trouble striking "anywhere".

While not common, Diamonds are available around here. The QC is poor, however, as some have no tips whatsoever and others have very tiny dots for tips. So I sort for the best, as already suggested, and bundle the worst for fire starters.

Haven't see Ohio Blue Tips around here for decades. IIRC, Diamond bought up the brand.

Ed: Penley matches are sorta like a legend. Many have seen them, but I can't find them -- except for mucho bucks online.
