Strike Anywhere Matches

I've always carried red bird matches:

i figure if they are kept in an airtight metal container (like a matchsafe) then if they go off by accident . . .
. . . you have a bomb.

The Swan brand began in 1883 when the Collard & Kendall match company in Bootle on Merseyside near Liverpool introduced 'Swan wax matches' these were superseded by later versions including 'Swan White Pine Vestas' from the Diamond Match Company, these were formed of wooden splint soaked in wax. They were finally christened 'Swan Vestas' in 1906 when Diamond merged with Bryant and May and the company enthusiastically promoted the Swan brand. By the 1930s 'Swan Vestas' had become 'Britain's best selling match' the brand is now owned by the Swedish Match company.

Folks,

I'm bringing this thread back up to the top, because it reminded me I need to fortify my stash of strike-anywheres. I looked in the likely places with no success- even the local Ace Hardware franchise where I bought my last ones a couple years back no longer carries them.

This evening on the way in from work I stopped at our local country "convenience" store, and since I've gotten in the habit of looking for these matches, I looked down the general hardware aisle, and sure enough, there they were! Not the Diamond brand, either, but a brand called Penley. They say on the box that they are made in Chile, so I was pretty sceptical, but I bought a couple boxes at just over a dollar each. I was very pleased to find that they are very consistent in the amount of "tip" compound, each having a generous amount like the better Diamonds. They seem to light very easily, too!

I will be going back for more. The bad news is, I have no idea where to tell you to find these. They look like the picture attached. Here is a link with the same matches, and also a group of other links that gives history, manufacture, etc. of strike-anywheres:

Better get them while you can, guys. They're not getting any easier to find, and I have been told that they are being used in manufacturing meth. (I have no idea if that is accurate or not, though).

Hope this helps! Y'all take care,
Regan
