heres a question for all the beckerheads, if you strip the bk2, is the spine sharp enough to strike a firesteel(think goinggear)? if not, how could one sharpen it? also how do you recommend i strip the coating?

sorta sharp enough, but it's easy to polish a flat with sandpaper to get a good 90 degree surface...

stripping. well. if i had a dollar bill for everytime ... yeah, if i had the time and inclination, stripping and then patina works for many people.

I stripped and squared my spine, throw sparks like crazy. All my knives get those 2 mods done to them.

moose and bladite- thanks guys, thinking about doing that tomorrow after i get some paint stripper. i just got my bk2 a few days ago, and.....well i feel like a traitor, but i actually like it more than my esee-5. to me the esee wins on coating, grind eveness( i think thats a word), and sheath.....but i totally dig the handle on the bk2. just fits the hand like a glove. hoping to purchase the micarta scales for it soon

The sharpening choil will throw some decent sparks if you don't feel like playing with the spine, I stripped my BK2 last night by hand <-----not fun; I would recommend any technique that involves power tools or paint stripper for stripping it:thumbup:

This is what my ESKabar does after its been stripped and squared, you can imagine what my BK2 can do. California won't let me in the state during the summer months.

Not meaning to hijack, but since we're talking about striping; has anyone ever used aircraft striper to strip the finish off the knives?

you are a traitor !!!:D

No worries I purposely bought a BK2 because I think (know) its better then the 5.. ESEE has the best coatings in the buiz. IMO, but I can't stand coatings for long with any knife that's been thrashed around so who cares..

Congrats !!!!! You're gonna love the 2..

@TxSxB- love i was thinking the same thing
@thegame- shoo, dont tell. this whole thing is really a scam between me and moose to sell more beckers and firesteels
@thelastdaze- just dont tell jeff lol

Moose, is that pic for real? If so, what were the dimensions on that firesteel? Ive never seen anything like it

Stripped the coating off my 2 using a brass wire wheel on a hand drill. I've kicked out fair to decent sparks using the coating on the 2 and 14. It just chewed the coating off in that spot through wear. I can see how making a dedicated spine spot for striking would be better though as the cleaner, more worn the spine coating, the better the spark. I will do whatever needs to be done for best performance.

Yes that is for real. Its a GoinGear 3/8" x4" Mischmetal firesteel, and my BK14 with the spine squared. My 8yrs old too the pic. Most of the time, when you square the spine of your knife, it creates a 90 degree edge, which works quite well as a striker and a scraper. The BK14 is a full flat grind, and when I squared the spine, I created less than 90 degrees with actually created and "edge" , a more acute angle than 90 degrees. On a firesteel, it throws sparks like a flamethrower.

I would think it would be "close"..hang on....The spine of my BK9 would do the job. but you can do as Bladite commented. Place some 220 grit on a block of wood, (this keeps you from rounding over the back edge) and run it with the blade. This should put a nice 90 degree edge on it.

Moose, that is amazing. I must start stripping and squaring.

Danke, it was daughter taking the pic, I do that with a firesteel all the time. Can't wait to get my Goingear Moose Model, gonna burn the house down if I'm not careful.
