Got me an AK47 today and hope to get a matching one here soon. I don't suspect I'll ever sell it and will put it to use. The coating looks so nice on it but i generally prefer plain steel. Let me here from some of you on if you stripped your AKs and if you were please with what you found underneath. Are the dimple heavy... that might even be a cool look for a sword. Love to hear your experiences either way.

Speaking of... I saw the last thread where someone got their AK banned... once done... is it easy to sharpen when needed? I guess it's just a high polish convex right? Not to use the "Just" word to make it sound like his work is anything less than amazing.

If you just decide to strip it , it will need to be heavily double cut, to ever look good,, they are kinda rough under coating... And Ban is the man,, but very busy,,,

My vote: first, beat it like there's no tomorrow. Heck ... there might NOT be.;)

Then, when it looks really crappy ... Ban it. It WILL be worth it.

Im so jealous.... show pics! I agree, beat the crap outta some unsuspecting foliage first then get her looking pretty.

They are very easy to sharpen, but if you don't do anything stupid with it the edge will last almost forever. I have put in several hundred cuts with my Banned AKs and they are as sharp as the day I got them back from him.

I'm stripping mine. One tree branch/blackberry bush at a time. One the coating is gone then I'll have to decide what to do with it. Just my thoughts on the matter.

I would just use if for a while if it was mine. I think it would really benefit from a convex edge, and I would likely send it out for that. Although, come to think of it, I have hand convexed all my infi so far (except for one that came already convexed by another, which I did a bit more work on). I even convexed my FBMLE edge by hand (what a pain).

I guess I could convex an AK if I wanted to my self, but just thinking about doing it by hand gives me a headache. I have a 1x30 belt sander that I have used to convex a few knives, but have not used it on a piece of infi yet. I don't want to round the tips at all.

I stripped mine and it seemed to increase the cutting ability by a good amount.

I like the dimpled steel it looks rugged and beautiful at the same time.

I say beat it, then strip just the outer coating and leave the black under coating. I love this look. And you will never be concerned about messing the blade up which is good because these bad boys want to rock.

It looks great as is! The black is the best coating for an AK!!! Now factory stain would be the $#!T.....and the banned blades look sweet as well...If you are going to use it break that Busse factory finish in then after you wear it down on hacking and slashing stuff strip it and renew the look!!!

The blade on mine is staying as virgin as it is.... It is a VERY special 1 of a kind AK, and will never be used for anything..... Except to make others jealous (you know who you are)!! ;)
It is shown in my avitar, but here are a few more pics!
