Stripped!

Sanded to 1500grit. Now I'm thinking that top half needs a patina (maybe blue/bleach etch?) And the bottom part should be polished. What do you think?

The blade feels a lot slicker and smoother. I will see if that changed chopping and battoning performance. Oh and whatever this blade was coated with is/was some tough stuff!!

Good work man, did you sand it off?

It looks great. The Cutlass is probably one of my favorite KaBar blades (well, I don't own one, but I think that will change eventually), and this is the first one I have seen striped. Looks like I've got myself a new future project.

And if the coating on that thing is the same as the other Taiwanese blades, yes, that stuff is dang tough, and I think I actually like it a bit more than the stuff that comes on the american made blades.

Thanks guys. I cant wait to try this beast again. I let it soak in kleen strip first. But that was only taking it off in layers, weird!

looks like a shorty, the blade is centered on the handle, and the blade length looks to be almost exactly half of the cutlass's 11in blade :).

Damn. Now I gotta strip mine. Gotta. that looks badass, bro.

Thanks man. I am debating on the patina. I want to try and blue/bleach etch the top and polish the bottom. What do you think?

I wanna do one etched like clich and them do, but I have a hard time making a workhorse so damn pretty, you don't want to use it.

And lets face it, that Cutlass is a throrough breed workhorse.

Do the bleach/blue etching, and lets see how it turns out. If your's looks good, I'll just copy you and say it was the original. :D

I am going to take you up on that. I just need to find a container big enough!

i would rather paint mine green, than strip it. rust and all that. can't abide rust in a working tool...

Would you please tell me more about the blue/bleach etch thing, never heard of it before. Thanks.

Blue, go check out the BKT forum, Clich has done a very extensive process for doing it, and it works well. Many are having success with it.

Went there, found it, thanks.

Now I just need to pick something to try it on...

BTW, the stripped cutlass is great. :)

Ok, I started this project last weekend. And I am having a hard time getting the coating off my cutlass. Probably just me doing it wrong, since I've stripped about 50 blades in the last year.

Eh, I'll get back to it soon I think.

The coating on mine was some tough stuff! I used the kleen stripper in layers. Let it sit, scrap a layer off, let it sit, scrap another layer off.

Told you, you should have tried brake fluid. I know of no better coating stripper. Not sure how it reacts with Kraton though.

PS: If it was mine I'd go for a wholegrain mustard, ketchup and mayo with garlic flakes patina in camo stripes.

Nice strip job.
I really love this chopper...a lot.
Even with it's slight hollow grind this thing throws chips like crazy. Eze-Lap diamond rod makes it shave.
