Stripped ESEE 6 - Best rust protection for under the scales?

I completely stripped my ESEE 6, and am looking for the best way to protect the steel under the scales. I'm thinking of using Ren wax or Marine Tuf-Cloth.

I want the very best protection so I don't have to worry about removing the scales to care for the steel very often.

Any suggestions?
 
interesting question, when I stripped my 3 I only stripped the blade and left the coating on the tang. I generally tell most people they way over exaggerate the rust issue on carbon knives, but the micarta handles do seem a bit porous, so I could see some moisture getting under the scales...

I would imagine something like tuf glide lathered on generously before installing the scales would stop any real problematic rust from forming.

but I also bet if you used nothing, and then put the knife through serious wet work for a year you would have a bunch of surface rust underneath, but nothing harmful to the knife at all. I could be wrong.
 
Maybe a few coats of clear spray polyurethane on the steel and also on the underside of the micarta. Just thinking out loud... clean it up good, degrease, tape off the blade, and spray a few coats. Then put it all back together. None would be the wiser and it should hold up better than an other coating.

This would work and is probably the best option. You could also put some thicker lube, grease, or anything that repels water under the scales.
 
Thanks for the input! So a few coats of polyurethane is the best rust protection? What should I use to de-grease the blade first? Will rubbing alcohol work?
