I used a paint remover gel. Removed the scales. Soaked the naked HEST in the gel for 30 minutes on aluminium foil. Then I used old wood spatulas and old toothbrush to remove the black goo. (coating turned to goo! :-D)
The grey patina was underneath the black goo I was not expecting it.
Some leather stropping and voilà !
(No sand paper used.)
The blade is soft to touch and the patina looks great ! The strop edge shines like a mirror. The thick blade looks even more solid without the coating. Impressive piece of steel !

I never thought I needed a HEST until now. Did the paint stripper cause the patina or do you think it was always like that under the coating? If it was the stripper, what brand is that and where can I get it?
