Stripped my Scrap Yard 511 - Strange marks on blade

Hey guys, I recently stripped my 511, as I do most of my coated knives, only to discover that there seems be an odd seam on blade. I sent these photos over to Scrap Yard to see if this was something to be concerned about or if it should be replaced. They said that these were 'machining marks' and that any blade I strip will show similar marks...

This is my first Scrap yard or any bussekin knife so I'm not sure, but I have owned many other KABAR/Becker/ESEE/etc knives and when stripped, none of them show anything similar to this. Is this really a tooling mark? It almost looks like a weld mark or something.

I saw similar marks on another one but they were different than the ones you have. I will have see if I can find

marks on it were all on the saber and ricasso, but only on one side

I've seen a lot of machining marks on Busse and kin when stripped, but nothing like that. I wish you had a close-up.

Do you still have it?

Most of the 11 series knives have those marks under the coating. They're the only kin knives that I've seen that have them.

Yes, that's the knife. Sorry, I didn't mean that I personally stripped it. It was stripped when I got it. Not sure how that is relevant though.

this is how its relevant ;

You stripped it?

It seems relevant because
1. they are not even your pics
2. the integrity of your story is in question
3. it is popular to dog ;) Busse and kin products out of jealousy and not legitimate problems

What defect? Coated knives aren't exactly meant to be pretty underneath.
Best suggestion that I can give is that you email Renee at the Yard with pix and ask her about this.

Personally, being symmetrical on both sides, I think it looks prety cool...but that's just me. :)

It is relevant. The truth matters.

Especially when in your original post you state how "you stripped it", and then go on to ask "if its something to be concerned about or should it be replaced" after you bought it 3rd maybe 4th hand already knowing that it looked like this prior to purchase.

Really:eek: Then you question the makers integrity since you had already according to your own comments above asked them if it was machining marks which they said yes to, and now you ask again here as if your hoping for a different answer.

So what is it that you want? According to the sales link I provided above it sold cheap with a sheath. Im not sure what you paid but that is irrelevant.

If you are looking to get it re coated by scrapyard for free I think that is absurd personally, but if you contact them they might just because they are so wonderful.

If your looking to troll you are in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I personally came into help you. Went and looked for the picture I was speaking of prior and stumbled on the sales thread where this knife has traded hands multiple times and was sold at a price reflecting that it wasnt new which was a bargain for not having the trouble and expense of stripper to only find that you have misrepresented everything in your statements and that draws to many red flags for me personally.

With a few more gulps of coffee, I see that you've already contacted the Yard.
I also see that you bought it stripped.
So you knew what it looked like, yes?
IF you are so concerned...why did you buy it?

If the marks cut in deeper on the blade, I'd be concerned about it being possibly weaker in that spot. But, along these lines the blade is actually a bit thicker, with more steel there. As a user...which it is now that it's been stripped, it will perform as expected or better.

So, what's the issue?

Not here to troll. Just asking a question. You can look at my post history to see if I've been trolling or confrontational. I was a gold member up until just recently when I let my membership lapse.

My apologies for not going into great detail about how I got the knife. I figured it was just easier to say I stripped it.

I understand that there are machine marks on the bevel where it is cut. I have a little bit of machining experience(certainly no expert) and I've just never seen something like this come from machining. Here is another stripped 511 that I found which does not have this kind of mark. I guess it's not a big deal as long as I can depend on the knife. I just don't want it to snap on me or something. It looks and feels almost like a weld mark, and that didn't seem right on a knife blade.

I'm not questioning their integrity, just wondering if they are seeing what I was referring to. I'll take some better pics from a close angle later.

and now it is defected???

there you have it...

He just wanted a new one so he could sell it for more

No. I did buy it, knowing that it had the marks. They don't really bother me, I just wanted to make sure it was structurally sound. I have never owned a Scrap Yard or Busse before and I actually wanted to see how the handle felt. The price was right on the knife. Didn't expect to come in here and be attacked because I said that 'I' stripped it when it wasn't actually me. Geez. I wasn't trying to sell for more... I actually want to use it.

If anything, this has radically turned me away from buying from the company...

Uncle Malice,

Do you honestly think that Busse (Scrap Yard Knives) or any reputable knife company would weld a knife blade together and pass it off as new, let alone do something like that at all?
And one other question... If you've already contacted the Shop which confirmed that these are only machine marks, how would we here know any different since we didn't make the knife and only have images to ponder over?

Long & short here... Beat it like it owes you money. If you unintentionally break it during use, it is covered.

Have a great day. :)
