Stripped NMSFNO

I really wanted the LE version, but it cost like twice as much. After 8 hrs of sanding and three worn out belts on my little 1" x 42" sander, I know why. I really should get the proper tools to remove the scales so I can sand the flats, but all my stripped Busses are like this, so it will do for now. The coating Jerry is using now is superb, unless you want to remove it. My usual stripper only softened it a bit after two applications, so there are still bits of sage in the hard to reach places.

The steel under the paint has an orange peel texture and machine grind lines with decarb, much like the competition finish without the convex edge.

It is a far cry from one of Horton's or Ban's or even the LE, but I can live with it.

It IS Swine Shaving Sharp, though.

Looks awesome Vic! I know it was a Pain, but let me know when you are ready to do another one.... ;)

Nice work! It's interesting to see exactly what's underneath.

I keep thinking of doing mine, partly because I want to fully convex it and that will mess up the coating anyway, and clog the belts up.

Very nice work!

I stripped my NMFBM, and gave it a ghetto satin job, but didn't put nearly as much time into it as you did, so it still has the orange peel and some grind lines.

Thanks, guys. One of these days I'll get around to getting a drill press and whatever tools I need to remove and reattach the scales so I can do it right.

Hey that looks A OK to me. I think you did a fine job there. I probably would have left it at the orange peel feel cuz I am a lazy guy but that looks really nice.

Very nice Horn Dog! As one who's never attempted anything like that before, could you answer a couple questions for me? What stripper do you use, and how do you keep it from damaging the grips? Also, once you have the orange peel texture what did you do to it to get it shiny like the last picture? Sanding?

Thanks, and great looking blade!

Man, that looks great! Nice job.

FYI... I use this stuff... it strips the coating in about 2 minutes.

I have been using Klean-Strip, but it doesn't seem to work well on the sage. Maybe Jerry has a new coating. It worked fine on the black coatings. The stripper does not affect the scales. It took probably over a hundred passes on my little 1" x 42" sander to sand off the rough surface. I wore out my 40 grit and 80 grit belts, and my 80 micron is slick now (that is the final finish). It is not an easy job, for me, at least.

Wow, sounds like a lot of work, but it paid off nicely. You did a good job. Thanks for the info.

Oh, I forgot to add: So the little Busse Combat logo and knife on the blade (and the "Embrace The Suck" on my SJTAC), are they only in the coating or are they actually stamped into the metal of the blade?

If it weren't for INFI, I'd go Horton. I love his blades too, but... not enough $$.

They are laser engraved.

Excellent job

I've been thinking of trying to strip and finish one of mine but I need to beat some more finish off her first. Maybe a winter project.

When I do, I think I'll leave the coating on around the scales like yours. It has to help repel the sweat from the hands and it's easier.:)

Thanks for sharing

Your work always looks top notch, this NMSFNO is no exception to that fact.

They are laser engraved.

But to get to the pretty INFI you must take off quite a bit of dimpled steel and decarb. I'm afraid the Busse logo is long gone. It is mixed in with the pile INFI dust beneath my sander. Anybody who knows knives can just look at the NMSFNO and tell it's a Busse! :D
