Stripped out clip screw

I purchased a "pre-owned" but ostensibly not used Recon 1.
I am such a sucker for Recon 1s as they are my very favorite carry/user-abuser EDC knives.

This particular one may very likely be AUS8 as the presentation side is marked "Recon 1" and the right side is marked merely, "COLD STEEL Taiwan."

In any event, one of the clip screws is stripped out and likely needs an over-sized screw and/or a drilling and tapping with an oversized screw.

Before I venture off ill-advised, I seek the wisdom of the Brain Trust here as I suspect this is not the first time my situation has been encountered.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Can you tell whether it’s the screw that’s stripped, or otherwise the aluminum backspacer?

Oh lordy this ain't going to be easy if it's a screw maybe ....if it's the backspacer that's bad . I have a feeling that eventually as our cold steel knives start breaking down and either get discarded or used up for parts we won't have any cold steel left. Anything and everything mechanical will break when I don't know but this is just an example of not being able to secure parts. Jux maybe can help you but I can't I don't have any idea what to do about that.

Thank you all for the replies; it would appear as though the backspacer would need to be tapped and the screw upsized.

For what it's worth, the clip seems quite secure with just the other two but the OCD (or the pilot) in me just wants it to be as designed.

I have an extra I can mail you. PM me if interested. Do the screw’s threads look fine? BTW, I’ve never stripped the threads from a Recon 1 back spacer and have messed with a lot of them.

Also, just curious, is the tang coated where the lock bar rides? If yes, it’s an unmarked XHP, if not, AUS8.

jux t,

Where the lockbar rides it's just uncoated silver steel - as you suggest, probably AUS 8.

Thank you for your very kind offer to send a replacement but the screw threads looks fine. Tapping and perhaps upsizing the replacement screw is an option.

I meant I have an extra back spacer for a Recon 1 if you want it.

Hi! I read that you have a spare «Back spacer» for the Cold Steel Recon 1 that you're willing to give away if someone needs it. Well, I'm one of those people who managed to strip the threads on my «Back spacer». Do you still have the opportunity to give this part away? I'd be extremely grateful, as they're not available for sale.

Worse case scenario and if you are handy there are M3 thread inserts, will be fiddly but going up a thread size will leave a odd size looking screw head.
If you look hard there are M3.5 screws out there but they are rare.

I considered the possibility of restoring the part, but technically it’s impossible. The thread is located too close to the edge, leaving no room for threaded inserts. Simply drilling it out to a slightly larger diameter and using different screws to me it’s a complete hack job.

Maybe you could help me get in touch with «jux t», since I don’t have a paid subscription and can’t message him directly.

Unfortunately I’m based in Ukraine, but would it be possible to discuss shipping to my country? I’m willing to cover all shipping costs and also pay a small extra amount (for example, $10) for the part. The reason is that I can’t find this original part available for sale anywhere. I would be very glad if you could still send this part.

That’s a bit involved for me, sorry. I’m particularly busy, haven’t even been on the forums in a good while but had a feeling to log in last night and saw this. If you find someone in the US who’d forward it or something then you can message me. Guess you’d need a membership. Take care.

Also, SnaggletoothMF makes a backspacer for these but they have a finger ring on the end. Could cut it off.

No problem, thank you anyway!
And I’d also like to find out something about your back spacer for the Recon 1: is it original, or was it obtained in some other way?

Original. I don’t recall coming across anything other than originals and the Snaggletooth ones.

If you happen to have the opportunity and are willing, I’d really appreciate it if you could send a package to Ukraine. It’s not too complicated—we could figure it out together. You’d just need to fill out the shipment details online and send it to a warehouse using a service that’s convenient for you (USPS, UPS, or FedEx).
