stripping down a water heater?

If the tank is coated in yellowish foam that looks sprayed on, it's probably urethane foam. When heated urethane foam releases cyanide gas so if you are going to burn the foam off...stay upwind!

Burning urethane is very dangerous. Even burning urethane paint should be avoided. There are a plethora of toxic gasses given off when urethane burns. It also burns extremely hot. I once heard it referred to as "solid gasoline".
 
Nick, John White has one of the nicest little non two handed sword sized HT forges that I have seen. You should ask him what kind of tank he used.
