Stripping my BK7: Chemicals?

what do i use to pull off the black before i get to polishing?

i thought about just sanding it off like i did with the boomslang, but that was not particularly efficient

don't want it patina'd, just stripped

I use sandpaper but I see people on here use Citri strip a lot. I think any strong stripper from the hardware store would work.

I like your fisk stripe personally :)

I go with Klean-strip, same diff. Good stuff! Let her soak smothered in the stuff for 20-30 min. Picked it up at the local hardware store.

What grit would you usually start with after stripping?

i used 250 with the boomer to get the coating off then stepped up 200 at a time 1k then 2 and 3

will 400 be good enough or should i go straight to 600 or 800?

on the 11 that I was trying to get really slicked, I started at 100. But on most I start at 250

I like Kleen Kote's stripper; 80% of the time it works every time. To heck with sanding... save that for the factory grind marks.

Kleen strip here also..... Plastic scraper and it is off in 15 minutes.... Great stuff..... Burns my damn skin though..... Even thru Laytex gloves.... Change gloves a few times during process.....

gloves? lol

yeah, chemical is way better then sanding. I sanded/wirebrushed my 9and sanded the blade coating off my 14....either one of those took longer then chemical stripping the 2,11, AND 16 combined probably LOL

each one of mine stripped differently. The 16 (100%)came off in less the 7 minutes, the 11 (100%) took maybe 15 minutes, the 2 soaked for over an hour and was only 98% stripped. Temp/weather apparently makes a HUGE difference...all my blades were stripped with KleanStrip from same can, but it was 27degrees/snowing with the 2, 80/sunny with the 16 and 60/raining with the 11.

I think the one you guys sue in the US is called Klean strip? Rough up the coating with some sandpaper (definetly helps) and then spray it on...leave for about 20 mins and then use a wire brush or small knife to scrape it all off. I found that after stripping it just came off in these gooey strips. Wear gloves and eye protection aswell, that stuff acid! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kV8cDsWG54w Your welcome.

Sandblast cabinet. Will do a BK7 in 45 seconds total, and leave a nice, even matte finish besides! :D

I been thinking about doing the blade on my 14 and getting the handles.... I'm too OCD for just saying it off. I want to do a mirror finish on the 14 I think. But we'll see. One of the problems of living in a aloft. No room for a shop.

yeah buddy! I know a guy with one of them, he owns a shop that makes tombstones...think my next Becker will pay him a visit!

Lacking a sandblast cabinet, I use the Klean-strip in a can. Spray on foam, let sit 15 minutes and scrape it off with a plastic scraper or cheap knife. Gloves and ventilation are a must. That stuff gets to stinging without.

I used Alabastine paint stripper gel for a Camillus BK7 and a Cold Steel knife. Gets the job done but keep in mind that scraping of the paint and additional sanding/polishing by hand will cost you a two days and two num arms. The Kabar/Becker BK7 seems to have a coating of less quality. Any decent paint stripper will do the tick.
