Stripping the black coat off a BK14

Yessir. Overachiever. Search and Rescue dog certified in Wilderness, Cadaver and Water searching.
That's his name?!? Overachiever? Better watch out he doesn't develop too big an ego :D
Love sheepdogs. Smartest of the Canines IMHO. Friend breeds em up north in the mountains. Tough to keep in tropical climates though. Had 2 Labrador rets, cpl Terriers (1 Fox & 1 Bull), a Boxer and whole bunch of mongrels. Currently trying to source a Dogo Argentino.
The hairy ones have a tough time in the heat and humidity so they are rare here.

Go for it. I used spray on Jasso paint stripper and worked like a charm. The rough finish on my BK15 was definitely tougher to get off compared to the finish on a Cold steel Trailhawk I stripped at the same time but it worked well.

The steel underneath is by no means smooth but has an even grind finish that I don't mind. These are work horses for me, not beauty queens.

I plan to sand it with 1200 to 200 grit and then try a Patina.
Some combination of Tobasco, French Mustard and Vinegar.
That's what I distilled from the bunch of posts I read here.
Maybe draw a pattern on it with the thick mustard and fill the spaces with vinegar or tobasco.

No, No, No. That was just a description. His name is Scout. Five and a half.

His hair isn't too long, and as soon as he feels himself getting too warm he heads for water -- stream, lake, mudpuddle, ocean -- he doesn't care.
My former partner, Phantom, is sneaking up on 16 years old. Now HIS undercoat was like 1/2" thick felt. Took him in for his first haircut ever last month and told the groomer I wanted a "puppy cut" which is about 3/4" all around. When I went to pick him up they had shaved him down like a Chihuahua! Dude! What did you do to my dog????

Where is "here"?

[Official thread hijack...]

"Here" is Mumbai/Bombay, India. Hot, humid and no water bodies I'd let any dog of mine swim in. My father keeps whats left of our pack in the south of the country. My friend the breeder is from a northern mountain state.
16? That's like the Yoda of dogs! Honestly with a 1/2 inch thick undercoat he'd collapse of heatstroke here. See a lot ppl wanting to keep Collies and St Bernard's and even Huskies in Mumbai and the dogs suffer and usually die because its always hared to find a home for a high maintenance animal like that. So I'd probably have shaved him too.

I did it. It was actually quite easy.
I sanded the coat down with 120 grit first

I read that it would be better to keep the coating under the scales but I did not know the effect the stripper would have on the zytel. So I wrapped the scales in foil and reattached them.

Then I left it in the Snot for 15 Mins and then realised the 120 grit wet/dry sandpaper would mark the metal. So I shifted to a steel kitchen scrubber

The kitchen scrubber took of the coat without touching the metal and I think it has left the primer on it. There is this smooth grey finish on the blade and I think it looks awesome. I am undecided on whether to sand off the primer. Advice please?

As you can see I left the coat to match the zytel scales. The lines are not too smooth but that part goes under the scale anyway. And I totally see the value of leaving the coat on under the scales, living in a wildly humid environment. Hence the reluctance to sand anymore.

Thank you all. It feels good :D

Good job Indianblade!

Ok testing this here and now

Doesn't appear to work. I tried typing the IMG prefix and suffix and I tried selecting the IMG code from the photobucket site.
I don't think I have permission yet here to attach stuff.

The BEST way???

We-e-e-ell, let's see... All out of BK-14's at the moment, so we'll have to demo with an -11.

No scraping, no burning flesh, no mess to clean up.

Well, you did ask what the BEST way was... :D

I'm so ashamed of my Harbor Freight hand held, gravity feed sandblaster
