Stripping the coating on American Lawman?

Scrapping of the blade is fairly simple, just use a softer steel and you won't scratch it. Hence the reason I used a SAK.

Just finished removing the coating from mine. Used about three applications of some generic paint stripper and the coating came right off. Has a nice, rough stonewash type look underneath, although there are a few flaws on the spine that are much more noticeable now. I seem to have forked up the blade centering, too, but I'll futz around with it.

I didn't do the liners, clip, or the lock bar, but I might do those next...then round off the sharp corners on the G10...

This could turn into quite a project. :D

I stripped the coating off of my mini lawman awhile ago using a sand blaster. I then mirror polished it, using metal polish, sand paper, and elbow grease. Took about 30-45 mins. Their blades are in decent shape under the coating.

Personally I've never seen a Japan made fixed or folded CS that wasn't Teflon coated.

The old school CS knives were all satin finished. Very nice looking. I'm glade to see more people removing the black coatings. I've been using Scotchbrite and Flitz, but the finish is no where near as this one on the Recon I folder.

Just stripped the coating off of the blade of my lawman. It looks MUCH better. I wish you could buy these knives without the coating. It wasn't hard to do but I'd rather not have to do it on the second one I bought.

Crappy iPhone pics inbound.

Here it is.

Is there any noticeable blade play after stripping the coating from around the hinge part of the blade?

I was worried about that also but after putting mine back together and playing with it a while it is just as solid as it was before I stripped it. It's still the most solid folder I own.

I guess the coating isn't as thick as I assumed because I was expecting at least a little play, but I was wrong. No worries, it's still solid as a rock.

zero blade play and it actually improved the smoothness of opening on both

Good to know, I got one on the way. I think I'm going to beat it up a little and take the coating off once it gets real ugly. It looks much better without the coating in my opinion.

How do you/what do you use with the metal polish? I'm thinking a shop rag or something more aggressive? I see you wrote sandpaper, is this for the "mirror polish"?

I'd like mine to have more of a "clean" look to it, but don't wanna sandblast it....
