Stripping the new powder coating

I have a BK2 and a BK16 is at the sheath maker right now. I've read a couple of threads about stripping the old coating and while I like the powder coating I was wondering if the new coating can also be stripped off with paint thinner or is there another way just in case I decide to do that?

Tons of threads on here about stripping the coating off. Quick search it, because it's seriously all there. Really no need to keep beating this long dead horse. Lol

I'd like to see someone try lightly sanding the bed-liner coating down to a smooth finish, while still providing protection to the blade.................at least until finish wears off anyway. I don't have the patience to attempt such a feat, but it seems like a possibility.

I did it today. I used 600grit sand paper smooth as eggs now. I did it on the grind portion of my bk2. Only took an minute or two and since its a fine grit you dont have to be too careful.

I sanded my 16 down with 1000 grit. Had it that way for about a year, until the coating started getting too gouged and decided to strip it. My 11 is currently sanded down as well; will probably keep it that way since it doesn't see too much hard use and the coating should stay longer. I like the coating way better when it's sanded. Only took a few minutes with a sanding block; you should try it!

Cool beans, that's for the feedback. I should have known that if I had a good idea, several other guys not only had it first, but actually followed through with testing it.

I'll buy some 1000 grit and give it a try. It seems like a smart way to get some benefit from the new coating before going full-strip and patina.

Kleen Stripper works for me. A chemical strip, for me, is the fastest, most thorough way to go.

What sort of sheaths are you having made for them? Leather or Kydex?

Ive sanded the grinds of my 7 and 15 leaving the flats/swedge as is. Ive done my 16 too. Ill keep em that way til I knock the pretty off and then ill strip and patina. Until then I will enjoy the way they were created, perfect!

I used 600 grit regular paper because thats what i have on hand. Doesnt take much pressure or work. I think the photos show the smoothness in the right light.

Thanks for the photos. It looks like the perfect balance of smoothness and protection.

So Bladite are you saying if someone strips the coating on a Becker it voids the warranty?
Ka-Bar has been pretty good at honoring warranties with issues of manufacturing defects, regardless of cosmetic condition. Obvisously, any cosmetic issues (like rust) will be on you.

So strip away and worry not.

After sanding the coating doesnt take much to mess it up. I was splitting pallet boards for about an hour. That did it for the coating so i ised strip ease it comes in a quart. Its like a gel only took ten minutes to strip it right off.

The spine is tough to get every bit of coating off.
