Are there any companies that make strong eyeglass frames made from stainless steel or titanium? Thanks in advance.

Hrm... I know that Adidas makes some very sharp looking Ti glasses...

and there's always Oakleys...

yes, they have a whole line of prescription frames. Not just the sunglasses frames w/ prescription lenses (but you can get that too).

They're actually getting fairly popular up here, and they seem to be pretty sturdy. Any eyeglasses shop ought to have 'em.

A few years back I saw some titanium frames made by Nikon that looked pretty cool. Btw, go for Ti--it costs more but it will not corrode and can be reused for a number of new prescriptions if you don't mind the same design over the years.

air-titanium

Minimum frames. Major choices in lens shapes. High $$$$$$. But I've had mine for almost five years now. Change lenses when needed.

They stay on in the TJ with the top down at speed.

I've had mine for about 8 years. I'm extremely hard on glasses, and mine look just like they did the day I bought them. Well worth the $$$!

Thanks for all the replies! Keep them coming. So far I might get a pair of Oakleys. The straight earpiece will be great for motorcycle helmet use.

i use a nikon titanium frame now...i also have one of those flexible ones...great if you accidentally fall asleep...i think you can get a 95% bend in 'em...

i like the oakley designs but it doesn't suit me...the glasses sit too close to my face causing my eyelashes to brush against the glass...damn annoying...i used to trim down my eyelash so it wouldn't do this....

It was very hard for me to read what my frame says because I had to take the glasses off to do it.

Apparently it reads AIR RIM MERKUR.

This are thin titanium wire but have held very well, I have used eye glasses since 1957 and have never had better. I believe this are made in Denmark.

One thing I really like is that they have no screws or welded parts, only 5 lengths of titanium wire bent to hold everything together, plus simple clear plastic nose pads and thin plastic covering for the ears, the plastic parts have worn twice, but have been replaced for free.

I have a great pair of titanium frames by Oliver Peoples that I got for my wedding. Simple, elegant, unobtrusive -- but definitely not cheap! I found probably four or five of his (their?) frames that I really, really liked, and then chose the one that fit my face the best (the eyesize number looks like 47-20, 52-19, 46-18 etc. I forgot which number means what, but one of them has to do with the spacing of your eyes/width across the bridge your nose.) All of the Ti frames were available in five or more colors (black, pewter, brushed chrome, autumn, beach).

Oliver Peoples' frames are very popular with Hollywood celebrities, and as such, have a wide variety of styles, some of them pretty wild. But they also have a good selection of more subdued, everyday frames.

Hope this helps,

Ted

I wear a pair of all Ti Bada Okio frames. All the rage in LA, apparently. The styling is A+.

They are STIFF Ti. They are hard to bend, but once you do, they stay bent -- i.e. no ductility at all. Very bad if you get bumped.

Not recommended. Cost about 4 bills too. I am looking to replace them too.

Oakely is good, but every optometrist I've asked has said that repairs and spare parts are nigh impossible to get -- it took 6+ months for him to get simple repair parts last time he requested them.

I agree that some of these Ti frames are outrageous in price. If you can't find one at a reasonable price (say, at Costco or some other big box store), then I'd recommend that you buy a small CRK Sebenza instead and go about your daily routine squinting. ;)

I just want a frame that won't rust or break indur normal use. Price range...I don't want to pay more than $300 for the prescription and frame.

Well I hope you find what you are looking for, and if anybody can give me any leads, I'm looking for prescription titanium or stainless steel pilot frames, universal bridge (solid plastic nose piece, not pads), cable temples (curve behind ear). Been searching for years.

Young whipper snapper....My lenses cost more than that alone. I have to wear no-line bifocals. There are only two manufactures to make the combination I need, Zeiss and Roddenstock.
