Strongest folder for 500 $?

My vote goes to the umnumzaan.

A picture is worth 1,000 words.

Just an Izula from RAT. Around $50, small enough to comfortable carry in your pocket, and will take more abuse than any folder could stand up to.

Lets try reading the thread before making more suggestions

I have 500 dollars and I'm looking for a very sturdy folder knife that, in case of necessity, can take heavy use.

Now I'm considering:

- Strider SmF
- Hinderer XM-18 (difficult to find for me )
- Chris Reeve Umnumzaan

What do you suggest me? Are there better folders in that price range?

I don't like to carry a fixed blade and normally I don't need it, I would want a very good folder that in an emergency situation can serve me without failing.

The SnG is perfect for my medium size hand, but I'm attracted by the longer blade of the SmF. My fear is the handle is not comfortable for me. What can you say me?

Just noticed this part.
The SnG IS perfect for you; don't get the SmF. Too big in the handle if your hands are truly medium sized.
The Umnumzaan will do you good, AND is cheaper than the SmF.

I am a huge CRK fan, but dont yet have a umnumzaan, so I cannot give you first hand info on it.

I just received a pre-owned lightly used Strider SMF from a jerzee devil member on saturday and all I can say is WOW ! The Strider SMF is a Folding Tank. I could not imagine a folding knife being any more heavy duty or comfortable for its size. When opened, you feel like your holding a fixed blade. The blade is very thick. I compared it to my large sebenza and it kinda dwarfs my large regular sebenza. Almost like the difference between the large and small sebbie. But after opening and closing the Strider SMF, then opening and closing my large regular sebenza, there is no comparrison. The sebenza is so much smoother. I just feel they are two different types of knives and should never be compared to eachother. The umnumzaan looks to be alot larger, heavier duty, sebenza upgrade. Anything the large sebenza can do, I am sure the umnumzaan will do it better. I definately plan on my next knife being a umnumzaan.

My advise: If you need a large heavy duty folder that would almost pass as a fixed blade and want to spend $500 and intend to use it for heavy field work, the SMF would certaily do just fine.

I find that many people will not need such a heavy duty knife and a umnumzaan should fit the bill better. Plus its $100 cheaper.

Alot of it comes down to what YOU plan to use it for. Just looking at my sebenza and strider, the sebenza would be a much better slicer as the blade is aprox 1/8" thick, while the strider's is aprox. 3/16". I have sharpened both and the sebenza is much easier to put an edge on it because of the thinner blade. Both knives use S30V steel, so your getting a premium knife steel with either choice.

I find all CRK to be very comfortable in the hand. The sebenza is awsome and the umnumzaan looks very similar, plus it has the grooves in the handle to add even more grip.
The strider smf looks like it would be uncomfortable, but after holding one and handling it, its amazing how comfortable it really is. I wear size large gloves and it fills my hand nicely.

The umnumzaan would be more sheeple friendly as pulling out the strider made my wife take a double look ( she is used to me pulling out my large sebenza ), I hope it was not her noticing I just bought another knife

The Umnumzaan (what an ugly name) is a beautiful knife, but I would be more confident with a thicker blade and I'm not sure about the handle grip (SnG is fantastic under this point of view).

I would be also interested in the Strider RC (a little expensive), but the recurve blade doesn't seem very appreciated.

I suggest you to send money to me! Please!

You want a tank of a knife? Get a Sibert Pocket Rocket!! THAT my friend IS a tank of a knife!! I got mine for $550.00.

I LOVE my Pocket Rocket!! It is an awesome frame lock. I recently had a custom sheath made for it. (Dave Abramsom aka Lifter's Leather.) For being such a big knife, it does ride quite nicely in the pocket.

What are the specs on it? :)

Another vote for Yuna...monster pivot, thick frame lock(including the cut out for the bend) laminated blade which should be stronger than the single piece and ZDP-189 will stay sharper longer than the s30v.

Here are specs: (From Shane Siberts site.)
I paid $650 for mine, not $550.00
Titanium handle slab
thickness: .162
Frame Finish: Blue/gray anodized frame (Mine is the only Diablo PR he has made. He did make a Diablo Monster Rocket.)
Blade thickness: .160
4"cutting edge
9"opened length
5" closed length
Average weight 8oz
Dual thumb stud
Tip down carry

I have never handled one but I hear that the Extrema Ratio RAO is apparently pretty tough. What the quality is, I have no idea.

It supposedly has some kind of locking pin that makes it stiff, and more fixed blade like when open. From what I hear its close in size to an F1 or an RC4 when opened.

All this is hear say on my part though.
