I have only used this knife to open mail and cut paper. I looked after 3 passes on the strop and I see the end fell off. I just looked at the blade before I stropped and it wasn't chipped. It didn't bend it just broke off, is 8cr13MoV that brittle ?

Mine made it through home stonewashing with no damage other than being extremely dull. If it can take tumbling around in a dryer with a bunch of rocks for an hour, I have no idea how a strop could chip it.

Yeah...that seems very odd...unlikely a strop would do that. I haven't had a sharpening stone knock off a piece of any blade before either. I'm stumped.

Does it still cut?

Will it still cut safely ?

broken glass cuts
paper cuts

A piece broke off the blade when I touched it to leather is this a sign of bad HT or just where it was ground down to thin ?

But until I asked I didn't know. After looking at all the goolge images I see that it was more than likely ground to thin. Seeing as most pics showed rounded off ends or a different style of grinding that curved off, not stayed level. It's a under $30 knife I was just wonder if I need to regrind the cutting edge like on all my Cold Steel Machetes.

You should have just asked that question in the first place. I am sorry if you read my or anyone else's posts in a negative manner. If it bothered you enough to post then I suggest you should call kershaw customer service. They have no problem helping anyone out that may have any concerns. I would be willing to bet they would replace the knife after inspection. Good luck Sir.

In the OP I ask " is 8cr13MoV that brittle ?"

Your Answer was "Does it still cut"

I'm still baffled that leather would knock a chunk out of any metal of any thickness or hardness.

I agree. It had to have been fractured prior to stropping to break off like that.

I'm not seeing a chipped edge, just a tiny flat at the very rear of the grind, where it meets the full tang?

Probably had a bit of a bur on the back end.

That is not really cutting area. On most knives, the apex of the edge does not go back that far. Likely what you had was a bit of wire edge pulled together by bring the belt back that far. Unless cutting edge has trouble, you should be just fine.

In the rest of those pictures, you can see the much thicker edge toward the tang, how it widens out, and there is not an apex of the edge at the very heel of the knife blade.

Hard to get a good pic that small, but that tiny flat is a chip. From straight down the blade you see flat shinny triangle spot where a tip once was. I know it was not there before I stropped. I have seen larger bur than this chip. If you look at the 2 Bladeforum links that have cryo's with the same grind lines as mine straight back not curve like the 3 pic I posted. If you look real close you see the apex of the blade gets closer to the red line and thinner, the bottom line looks curved because the blade widens. It was thinnest part on the knife, thinner than the front tip.

The answer to your questions are - No, the stropping didn't chip your knife and no, 8cr13MoV is not that brittle. It was pure coincidence that the little piece of metal fell off. Problem solved, you may now thank me. :D

I thought maybe it was so thin that the strop was just bending it back and forth till it broke off. O' and Thanks

I guess your delivery leaves much to be desired. I asked does it still cut, as in the entire knife due to your concerns of possibly being too brittle. That would be a heat treat/ composition question to me. You did not go into detail of that. You would recieve better answers faster, if you were not presenting yourself in the manner of being constantly on the defensive. I am not here to pick on you, nor are the others. I see you have not been here that long and might be used to people being rude on other forums, however we are not like that here on the Kai subforum, and try to be friendly and to the point (helpfull) as best we can. If you spend a small amount of time here you will see we try to help anyone out that has a question or concern. As you can probably tell from the posts you recieved, it is very unlikely and highly improbable that your strop chipped the edge.

If you have any concerns with it being that it is your knife and you took the trouble to post up the question (which shows me you have concerns), as I previously stated please contact customer service and they would be more than happy to hear any concerns you have with your cryo. All information to contact them is at the top of this sub-forum and stickied. And again good luck Sir.

Yea because "does it still cut" was spot on delivery and so helpful A lot forums would ban troll post like that for post whoring or being a smart ass
Your the only one that come across as troll, why you keep acting like I am on the defense against every body "I am sorry if you read my or anyone else's posts in a negative manner." IT'S ONLY YOU DUDE ! You most have learned so much in your 18 months compared to my 12, regular O'timer here.
1 in 1,000,000 things do happen and IT DID chip my knife, but see how I can't find a single pic where others have not already chipped off (check my brother cryo chipped same spot) I guess It's just the way the knife is.

Death to the troll Add to Ignore List he wont bother me again
"does it still cut" :jerkit keep acting like that has helpful.......

Kybosshog I would take a step back and calm down.. Bad_JuJu Said does it still cut as meaning that little chip on the end of the edge doesn't really effect the performance of the knife. And if you knew JuJu at all he is a great guy and posting in forums there is no way to show how you mean your statement to come off. He wasn't at all being a smart ass. You just viewed it that way. And I don't care if you are here 18 months or 18 minutes it doesn't make you any more or less of a person.

And if you are concern with you edge contact Kershaw through there website and show your problem

I think maybe you guys got off on the wrong foot here. Step back and take a breath this is a forum and sometimes things come across different than how it was meant.
