How do you use the leather strop. Where is the best place to buy one and what is the canvas side for?

I'll tell you to get the same one I have. Go to ruprazor.com and find the strops, usually he has 2 or 3. The filly is 20 dollars including shipping (in the US) It had the regular side then a rough side, the rough side has compound already added, what I do is use the regular side 50 laps before a shave then around 5 laps on the rough side, this isn't needed I just do it to be carful. Its a nice strop made with good leather, believe me you won't find another strop this good for this amount of money.
