I've seen a few links in the past to cool-looking professional strops.

I haven't ordered one yet, because I wasn't sure if anyone here actually USED one.

Can someone recommend one they've used (and liked), that I can order online?

Thanks,

Mike

Knives Plus 1-800-687-6202 $14.97 8" on a pine base. Comes fixed with a high chrome polishing compound worked into the leather.

I have used professional barber strops (Canvas and leather) paired with white polishing compound and jewlers rouge, and have found that an old, thick leather belt with flitz polish is every bit as effective. Save our money and buy lots of flitz, it is a great product.

I use a barber's(?) strop that my grandfather gave me. Actually two strops fastened at one end-leather, and "fine weave solid linen silk finish".
It says Peter J. Michels, Inc., Brooklyn, N.Y. "DELUXE" C-MON Hand Made Pedigreed Russia on the leather strop.
Good luck finding one, I think it's about 50 years old:p

Guess they last a looonnnggg time if you take care of them!

I have used a hanging dual strop (canvas / leather) from Lee Valley to touchup convex edges for quite some time. The canvas side is loaded with a white paste (chalk based I think) and I use that for mainly alignment. The leather side is loaded with a CrO compound and that is used for polishing. I also have a leather hone, dual sided leather, one is plain and the other has the CrO compound. This allows polishing and aligning flat ground edges. The CrO compound cuts fast and leaves a mirror finish. Lee Valley sells both compounds.

Michael,

I have 3 strops that I use with different compounds on each one. You can make the BEST strop in the world, yourself, for minimal $$$$$$ :)

Tandy sells leather belt blanks, I used the 2" wide ones, rough side up. I made mine about 18" long and stuck them to their backing boards with double sided tape. I use green and red compounds for steel and sisal wheel polish for Talonite. Every knife that leaves my shop is finished on one of my homemade strops.

I have tried the barber strops and they don't seem to do much to my D2 and cobalt alloy knives.

What are you trying to sharpen? If it's a knife, I don't know. If it's a straight razor, you can find lots of strops on line. I like the free-hanging ones, not the ones on a block, and use it on my razor every day. If you're trying to sharpen a razor, don't use any Flitz, Chromium rubbing compound, etc. They are FAR too rough for a razor, just use the paste wax.

my great grandfather taught me to use the leg of my jeans as a strop after sharpening a blade or to sweeten an edge after using it....just pull the leg of the jeans tight and strop away on the front of your thigh....it really works well!...i have done this for over 30 years and have yet to cut myself once....one day i'll get around to getting a real strop but as long as i wear jeans i have a strop with me all the time!...it will also work with the rougher canvas khakis that so many people wear now

a piece of cardboard will also work...i read about it on the emerson forum as suggested by ernie and it also works well.....thanks...feverdoc

feverdoc;

Are you alluding to the Calvin Klein Disco Cuts you wore today?

J Scott

p.s. thanks for the tip

My 75yr old father-in-law said HIS father always stroped his pocket knives on 2x4's or fence posts or whatever wood was available. Never saw him actually SHARPEN the knive, but said it was always amazingly sharp.

Wasn't sure I believed him, but it's sounding like there might be something to that...

Huh. I've been intuitively doing that myself lately. I'm not entirely sure it makes any difference though. Kinda neat to hear it from someone else -- I thought I just made it up!

Michael,
I own, and use, a Hand American PC10 Leather Hone and it lives up to every great thing that I ever heard about it.

I really do need to do a review on this system. It's a great product. I couldn't believe how much more sharp it makes an already supersharp edge. It's almost too good to be true!!:)

Also, do a search over at the "Keeping Sharp" forum at KFC. There is much good info there for the stropping enthusiast.

Thanks. That's exactly what I had in mind.

If they had a web order form, I'd have ordered one right now!

Guess I'll try and give them a call tomorrow. I _really_ hate that.

I hate that too!!!!

It's a good thing that they're so nice when you call. You forget about the aggravation of actually having to wait and use that damn telephone thing. Plus their products are top quality. Very nice stuff. That helps too.;)
