I am considering trying the Stropman compounds. Anyone know the grit size of the black and white compounds?

Stropman doesnt know whats actually in there. He quotes rough numbers somewhere on his website but those mean nothing.

I didn't see any numbers on his website, but I'm not saying they are not there.

Can anyone offer a comparison between the stropman compounds and others on the market?

If its intended to hone and not cosmetically polish, is entirely possible he doesn't give exact specs because its proprietary.

Just a guess, but the black is likely 15-20 micron and the white .5 - 1 micron.

Thanks! Would that make the stropman black compound more abrasive than the Bark River black compound?

That range is actually taken from a close look at the Bark River stuff. Is also what I've observed from the Dico black compound, Ryobi black as sold in the multi packs at HD, and the old Sears black - all fell in this range.

As for how abrasive it will act, some of that comes down to the binder, all other factors being the same. Binders that hold the abrasive in place better, will tend to get more purchase when grinding and have more effect per rated grit size. Is also possible to have different levels of friability in the abrasive mineral, but this is likely a distant second compared to average size and binder.
