stropping with turtlewax red rubbing compound?

Anyone ever used turtlewax red heavyduty rubbing compound as a stropping compound? If so how good did it work?

Not well. The particle size is too large and the abrasive intended more for paint then metal. If you have some flitz/simichrome/metal glo and don't want to order some green CrO compound then go ahead and use those.
