Try 220 to start with. It cuts fast and gives a good enough finish that you can move to the gray Sharpmaker stones. Use wet/dry paper, and a little water wouldnt hurt. Using edge trailing strokes (stropping) will keep you from scraping all the grit off the paper in the first pass.

What type (grit?) sandpaper would you recommend?

220 grit works very fast and leaves a fairly nice polish in the process.

So i tie the sandpaper to the rods (somehow) and sharpen on the sharpmaker as usual?

I have not tried this but doing edge leading strokes into sandpaper is not a good outcome.

Yes, as I've tried edge leading strokes on sandpaper and you'll end up cutting the paper . DM

Yep. Except for this one sandpaper I bought that seems to work well with edge leading strokes.
