I'm not sure this is the correct forum for this but I need to get the info out for the safety of the knife community. I am a previous employee of Stroup Knives. I worked there in the past 2 years, for most of that time. Stroup knives heat treats their steel in Canola Oil, the knives have been Rockwell tested in the 54-56 range even though they're advertised as 58-59 Rockwell on the site. The testing was done off site as they do not have a Rockwell tester at the facility. I expressed my concerns about sub par heat treating and was told who cares, no one knows. These are also advertised as 1095 HARD USE knives, mainly they are not 1095 but more 1084, or whatever NJSB decides to send. Parks 50 was used for about 6 months but I was made aware that they have switched back to canola oil , bought a rockwell tester, and are still getting super soft knives. Buyer Beware, and I hope this saves someone from getting hurt using one of Stroup's knives.

Wow. It's good that you came forward but can I ask what led to you leaving their employ?
I notice they make a knife that looks a lot like a Becker (although not the Brute) they call the BK-1. That's a tad sus.

PM me.

Well Bladeforums just met you and your first post is a pretty hot one. A little background into who you are and what lead up to you posting would potentially instill some level of trust in your audience. Until we know who we are communicating with, none of this information is useful really.

Bill, if you read the post, it states very clearly that I am a previous employee that is concerned about the safety of people thinking they are buying a quality products when they are buying soft knives.

Or, and hear me out. You're someone who got fired for cause and now has an axe to grind. That happens here all the time and without bona fides your post is merely opinion.

Not opinion. Simply unsubstantiated. There is a difference.

He may very well know what he is alleging to be true...but "we" are not in possession of the facts, and thus not in a position to make a judgement.

Where would you like the knife sent, I have one you can test. Its been tested before.

Bill: care to opine?

Let's meet in the middle and call it uncorroborated.

This is your opinion... the turn over rate is very high there, 20 or so employees came and went in the time I was there. If you say anything management about how this isn't right, we shouldn't say this or that, you become the new enemy and get terminated. I thought long and hard about posting here, like I said, he is lying to everyone, and there are literally thousands of examples of his out there. I'll send you mine if you would like. Do you have a Rockwell tester? I sincerely hope someone else comes along to validate this, but like I said, I have one you can test.

Let's hold off on sending it out to someone who is simply a member here, and wait until someone with credentials we all respect in this arena, who is also a party with no dog or interest in the outcome, (beyond the search for truth), steps up and expresses willingness to test the HRC and other characteristics of the knife.

This is simply my opinion. You can do as you see fit with your property, especially as the current matter under discussion is yours exclusively at this juncture.

I would think a knife maker would be the appropriate party, no?

An experienced, respected maker or someone with credentials on the metallurgical side, like Larrin, (for instance), would be my choice.

That said, I can see some not wanting to be perceived as intruding into a quagmire not of their making...and having to suffer potential fallout from individuals who take umbrage, regardless of whether justified.
