Structural Steel I-Beams as Avnils - advice please

Nick, you don't happen to have a foto of you carrying that one around like you did the Centurion, do you? :D That's a neat hunk of steel.

Look at those arms! You just know he can! ;)

HA! I picked it up one time, just to see if I could. I highly recommend NOT DOING THAT.

I've had visions of what my foot would look like had I dropped a 450 lb. anvil with sharp corners on it. :barf:

And btw-, this is not just a hunk of steel! :p

I'm a nut, but I look at it like sculpture... Often I'm just taken aback by the beauty of it, because of it's form and fuction. Thinking about a 450 lb. chunk of tool steel being heat-treated is crazy amazing... and then slapping it on a mill to surface the face... just as crazy! :D

And yes, I need to get out more. :o :p

You mean, something like THIS? :)

I agree it's not "just a hunk of steel". It's a "neat hunk of steel". That's an altogether different class of hunk. :p You know I wouldn't insult your anvil, Nick.... :)

If you go over to Don Fogg's forum, do a search for a steak anvil, Don made one up that would work 100 times better than the I-beam, and it was simple/cheap.

Happy Hammering :D

The stake anvil is a great idea that I had not considered seriously enough. This is one beautiful anvil you have there!

The I-beam ideas is out, both because of the work involved in making something useful with it complared to the simplicity of other ideas, and the fact that I just bought a used 70# NC anvil (here is a new one, the on on the bottom of the page http://www.nctoolco.com/anvil.php) for $35!

Yeah it was designed for making horse shoes but it seems to still be in good shape and hopefully it will serve me well for a while.

Also, no offence take by any of the advice. It was not exactly what I was hoping to hear but I really appreciate it.

Any suggestions on what to do with those I beams now? (other than that...)

Chris

HaHa, I typed "steak" anvil. I guess I had a big cup-O stupid this morning! HAHAHAHAHA! :p

The tool stand idea is good, if they're long enough.

For a new guy trying to learn to forge on something other than a real anvil would be real frustrating. At least for me it was tuff enough learning on the real thing. There wasn't but just a few books when I started and I wasn't online either so it was try, try, and try again. I know the HF anvils aren't all that good but there still better than the other alternatives. Who know's Nick may want to get an even larger anvil when he finds this one is just to small and give you a good deal on it. :D
