Here is something new from Stuart Branson.

Ken,

That is a very nice photo, but it looks much better in person.

Stuart's work is wonderful and that's absolutely no exception....great acquisition. :)

Very, very nice indeed! Stuarts work never ceases to amaze me. Congrats.

Just exquisite Ken. Stuart never fails to please.

What wood is in use on that saya? Old repurposed oak? Bog oak?

Gorgeous.

meh, pretty average...

...for a savante!

Now that work and family dinner are over I want to add a few comments.

This piece is something that is completely different from everything else I own. Frankly it is not the kind of thing I even ever thought I would want.

But after having seen some of Stuart's pieces here at BF, including his awesome Tuareg Dagger, I decided I really wanted something from him, and this was it.

Some of you who know me know that, with some exceptions, I generally do not post my new acquisitions here or anywhere, and even when I do it is rare that I accompany them with extensive comments. But I really wanted to share Stuart's work with folks at the Blade Show and here for several reasons.

First, Stuart was a pleasure to work with throughout the process. His concern about the quality of what he makes and his attention to detail are exemplary and show up in the final product.

Second, he exceeded my expectations and I only wish that more of you could see this item in person, as the pictures do not come close to doing it justice - especially the terrific hamon on both sides. It should also be noted that the grinds are very different on both sides of the blade, which you can see if you compare the two photographs. I am VERY happy with it and it now resides in a special place within my home.

If anyone is ever considering contacting Stuart to commission any kind of sharp and pointy object from him - dagger, tanto, katana, kukri, wakizashi, whatever - I cannot encourage you more strongly to do it. I do not believe that you will be disappointed.

I can see why you stepped out of your normal comfort zone (and mine) to pick this up. Good choice. Wonderful, refined combination of traditional and modern. Starting to create an itch I can't afford to scratch.
