Stuck, first knife for my daughter main blade question

<slaps self upside head>

It hasn't arrived yet but while I'm bemoaning the aesthetics of the spear blades on the canoe, has she seen the White Owl's? I think they are also the same size, with a pen secondary, but, if I remember correctly, the spear blade that I prefer the profile of.

Just a thought...

You know, this forum informed me on the utility of the pen blade. I bought a GEC Canoe (first knife with a pen) and found out the guys here are right, it's awesome for that. Now I save the main blade for food type stuff. A Wharncliffe would be great for slicing a tomato at camp or something..... now if GEC would make a Wharncliffe Little Indian Girl Canoe, you'd be set.

Ed, I'm mostly recalling the discussion here. Specifically,

Perhaps more anecdotal than conclusive, but I do know that one of my spear blades is the only one I've managed to close mid-use, so the above caught my attention-- adding to anecdote. ;)

Agreed! :)

Thanks for the info, P., I'll have to be more careful with my spears than I thought. I can see why this could be the case, indeed, is the case. Having not had an experience with my own spear point knives to open my eyes and my fingers, I just didn't see the reason intuitively. I learn pretty fast though and this is a much better way of learning than having my knife fold on my hand!!! :eek:

Get her a "my first Opinel" with a rounded tip or an Opinel 6 or 7.

The thing about a friction folder is there is less chance of a sprung blade snapping shut on small, comparatively weak fingers. Slipjoints are designed with the assumption of an adult user.

IMO, a young camper has no functional need for a knife. Instead the need is educational. How does one cut safely? How does one open and close a knife safely? In short, can they become comfortable and competent with a knife. IMO, this comes from messing around with knives. But I think you also need to take into account the physical limitations OS youn hands.

Out of the box, an Opinel is sticky. Suggest you tune up the joint and carry it a bit until its working smoothly. This is the knife I started my kids on.

I envy the OP. my daughter, age six, is not ready for a knife of her own. She also is not yet an real enthusiast of camping and hiking, although she does humor her old man from time to time. I hope to be doing this rite of passage some time...

The pen blade is just like a small spear. A knife with a pen and main wharnie or clip blades would provide the most uitlity IMO. I agree with others suggesting that she try a few different variations to determine what she likes the most.

Lots of great suggestios and tips, much appreciated by all. Her birthday is in April so I have a little time. U like the idea of the small/mini traper with the wharnie and clip. 3 1/2 inches I think is a great starting size as well as two equal length blades to see what she uses more. I am obviously still open to more great ideas :). I plan on teaching her how to sharpen it and care for it. She will only be a loud to have it when I am around to give it to her and supervise/teach her proper usage.

I just received my GEC White Owl. I definitely like its blade shapes better than the Canoe. Nail nicks are on opposite sides. The blade on the White Owl seems to me to be thinner stock than the Canoe though.

But, I'm sure she'll be happy with whatever Dad decides to get her. :D
