Schlager –

ghostsix is gone from these forums.

I'd like to read a proposed derivation from Tagalog. Anybody got one?

Continuing with Cougar Allen's example, there are some modern languages in which the current, non-offensive terms for <EM>Negro</EM> sounds almost identical to "nigger". Their non-offensiveness in those languages nonwithstanding, the word remains offensive in English.

I was prepared to believe that ghostsix had meant no racial slur (as anyone reading my original remarks can see); as far as I'm concerned, he just expressed himself <EM>very</EM> badly.

Actually, the Korean word for American is "mee-guk." "Han-guk" is an adjective for things or people that are Korean. "Ah -da-shi" is Korean for man.

And just for kicks, "sah-rahm" (with a rolled 'r') means people.
Han-guk sah-rahm = Korean people.
Mee-guk sah-rahm = American people

And....yes, despite my forum name (which was implemented for humorous purposes) I am Korean American.

I hate to het off subject, but I am curious...what is the etymology of the word "gook?"</font>
As Ronald Reagan says below, Han-guk is the Korean word for Korean things. I heard from a USAF Korean War vet that the American military guys stationed in Korea often heard Koreans using a derivative of han-guk when referring to themselves, and the "guk" part was what stuck in the minds of the American soldiers. I can't imagine that it wasn't used with a negative connotation.

Oops! I just noticed how old this thread is.

Yes, this is an old thread, and it's a continuation of another thread on another forum, Practical Tactical if I recall correctly. Ghostsix had a habit of posting a reply to something somewhere else entirely, where it would appear as a complete non sequitur and confuse everybody, but this was one time I managed to figure out what he was replying to....

Later, after Ghostsix was banned, somebody suggested the finger cutout in the choil of his Randall might have got hooked around a rib. That seems reasonable to me -- you might think he would have noticed that, but people have missed much more obvious things than that in the heat of combat ... you get into an abnormal state of mind....

Use of Weapons

Having never got a knife stuck in a person, I can't say I know anything about it for sure, but, assuming the person was dead, couldn't you just push/bend the handle over from side to side, 180 degrees, using your foot if you have to, to get it loose enough to pull it out? Like I said, I haven't been in that situation, but it seems that there must be something you could do....

Hell, I thought you were dead.
According my my ex ROK Marine M.D., conflict vintage, Gook just means person to a Korean.

Cougar Allen, I was still a lurker when Ghost Six was around BF, and I could never make up my mind whether or not he was "legit." I did enjoy some of his stuff, but was turned off by many of his responses toward the end.

Were there ever any solid conclusions about him?

Karl

The "Ghost" is real.
Others know him.
No other service Mag. has used his call sign in publication.
Or, at least, not to my knowledge.
They can`t do that.
Not the AF,Dept. of the Navy or the Army or, any other U.S. radio identy.
Look at the combat record.
That is all that counts.
