Hi. first post. Im looking for a new knife for every day usage. Do you prefer thumb studs and thum b disks or do you prefer thumb holes and thumb ovals to open the blade?? And why??

I like thumb studs and holes the best. I do not care for thumb disks at all. I have never had a thumb stud get caught and cause my knife to open in the 33 years I have carried a knife.

Welcome to the forums.

In my experience, I like holes better. They may be opened with either hand and they are easier on your thumbs than studs when the knife is stiff.

You will get many opinions, but it is really a personal choice. Get out and try a few and see what you like.

I prefer holes. If there is a store that carries knives near you, you could go try a few models and find out what you like.

It depends on which knife, for me. If I'm using my work knife and I have to find the opening position by feel or in a hurry, holes work better. My sister is an EMT and uses the same model knife I do and her experience is the same.

If it's a personal EDC or a dress knife, I usually go for studs. The knives are a bit smaller and sleeker and I'm not in a hurry.

Holes. I just find it a little easier to open folders with holes than studs. However, that doesn't mean I dislike thumbstuds. In fact, my favorite folder is my Sebenza.

Disks have worked well for me, I prefer holes, especially oval holes, as they offer more range in thumb position. That gets me into the sweet spot of leverage better than the limited position of a stud - which may not have a real optimal shape. The 1Gen Vapor II beehive stud is not so much. They changed it.

Studs get snagged in my pockets for me - jeans, usually, so you have to try and see what works for you. Having heard of studs and discs that fell off, I prefer the more minimal and elegant design of "nothing" to a potentially failure prone and non-ergonomic add-on.

Yea i also like holes better. Although studs dont bother me, i found when using my knife camping and for food prep the hole didnt get in the way like the stud, plus it stays cleaner.

what knife is this if you don't mind me asking??

My wife, my sister, and I all carry Spyderco Delica 4s for work. Carolyn and I use ZDP D4s and sis carries a VG10 D4, all PE.

Sis and I carry Benchmades for personal EDCs. She has a CE mini-Grip and I carry an H&K 14210. Carolyn uses her ZDP D4 for everything.

I prefer the holes. They don't get in the way, and they are much easier to keep the knife clean. Gunk tends to build up around those studs, for that reason I do not like them for food preperation.

I prefer spyderhole, just easier to use. For last couple years I am using only Spydercos, no way to go back to studs.

Holes by far. They are just easier to find and don't tear up your pants or get caught on things. Sydie-holes are my personal favs.

Both are fine, I do use the holes on the PT that I own. To me, really the knife/blade configuration is far more important than the opening method. I do agree with that the disk is the one exception, I really don't like it. Steven

i think holes are easier to open initially and thumb studs always take me a little bit to get used to on a new knife. However once i get used to them i prefer the thumb stud....

Also i hate to look of most holes..... having a big hole cut out of the blade of you knife may not effect how you use it but it sure does look ugly

I just go by the design of the knife- I can get along with a hole or a stud. Don't care much for disks at all.

My real preference is for an Axis or Arc lock because then I don't need the stud or the hole.

Well designed they are the same to me, both are easy opened.

However if you want an example of bad studs, check out kershaw storm, literally cut your thumb after you open it for a couple of times, then it's too painful to open.
