Which do you prefer to open your knives? I like holes, they're easier for me with either hand, and don't get in the way when sharpening.

Studs open better for me. With a really sharp knife holes can be dangerous. I've nearly removed my thumb print on occasions with my Spyderco.

I think anyone who says Studs is going to be looked at funny. And anyone who says holes has to live with them, and they are blade-ugly. But I'll take a good hole over a stud everytime.

I take a hole over a stud anyday

But seriously folks....I like a stud for easy flicking.

In other words, "Do I prefer Spyderco, or other brands?"

I like them both!

P.S. Yes I know other brands, including Benchmade have thumbholes. Just a bit of sarcasm.

Ah,, but thumbstuds allow you to do an Emerson-Wave-type opening by hooking the stud on the edge of your pocket as you draw. Plus, I find them much more comfortable, not having to reach as far over to push on them (they stick out from the surface of the blade, whereas you have to put your thumb partially through the blade to use a hole).

Of course, there is always the Axis-lock style of opening

, in which case this question is irrelevant.

Hello, again, Mr. Utopia, it's nice we can again engage in friendly discourse. Personally, I prefer the "bigger than average" thumbstud. I think Mr. Utopia was refering to the "thumb disc", which I like. I also The Boker/Brend big thumb stud, and it is textured. I don't like holes much. I even prefer the oval holes over round holes. And, I absolutely love the Browning Pirhana "Thumb ridge".

The thumb studs on my CRKT Crawford/Kaspers are large, and easy for my thumb to push.

The hole on my Spydes, on the other hand, are cut leaving a very sharp edge, and didn't feel very good to my tender thumb!.

Also, as mentioned here before, there is more of a reach problem with the hole than there is with the thumb stud.

Personally I prefer the hole. I don´t use my knife as a tactical weapon but as a cutting tool. Therefore the possibility of fast opening is not that attractive to me. The hole, on the other hand, has a number of other advanteges. 1 When I cut there is nothing hinderring the material sliding of the blade. 2 It´s much easier to clean than the stud. 3 You are able to hang it (in order to dry)using the hole. 4 It doesn´t get caught in your pocket. 5 The manufacturer is able to make the blade much thinner. The stud demands a thicker blade in order to build in some stability.

Holes.

Holes are by far the easiest way to open a folder.
There are so many position on the blade you can place a thumb stud (or disc) that some brands tend to place the stud too close to the handle (when folded), see CRKT M-1602Z for instance.

(staggering about in minor shock)
I just realized, I don't OWN a knife with a stud!
Lots of holes, disks, and a wave. A couple with switches and one with a WAY cool lil' button,(Halo) but no STUDS!

Hmmmm
(off to browse 1sks so I can buy something with a stud then come back and offer an EDUCATED opinion!)

BTW,
So far, NOTHING beats the wave and that includes ALL my autos.

I cut it, and I cut it, and it's STILL too short!

I prefer holes, and don't think it detracts from the appearance of my AFCKs, though my Spydercos won't win any beauty contests. Other than that, the large thumb disc also lets you open the knife ambidextrously. I don't own any with studs-hate the things, personally.

Studs. The bigger the better! Now let me explain. I have had several brands of knives with different sizes of opening pegs. I have really gone Microtech crazy the last couple of months by trading off most of my knives to replace them with MT's. It is purely coincidence that I like the opening studs on the Microtech better than any other. These are of larger diameter and short enough not to snag clothing. The only other peg opening knife I have kept, due to quality, is the Al Mar SERE 2000. This is a fantastic folder but the studs are long and narrow and sometimes get snagged on my pocket. I do not really care for the disc. I do go for those buttons, though. And if you like the buttons you might as well get the best buttons in the buisness. Of course I,m talking about MT!!
