Studs vs Holes

All the same to me.

Holes for sure.

Easier to find. Easier to grasp. Easier to open. IMHO, of course. And I think their kinda purty.

Just wanted to add that holes do have an advantage in situations where your grip is extremely compromised. That's why my brother carries a Spyderco Rescue Jr. kayaking. Having wet, cold hands makes the hole stand out from thumbstuds.

Firstly, I usually sling the blade open without even touching the blade..I keep the tension tight enough for secure carry, but loose enough for a good flick of the wrist to fling it open.

I prefer holes - prolly b/c my first serious folder was and still is my benchmade AFCK. I don't like the blade design/shape of the spydies, but that's not to say they're not good knives - just not my style.

I picked the AFCK b/c I didn't like studs at the time...in general, I still don't - unless they work exceptionally well. One exception is the BM330 designed by Mel Pardue - I like it a lot, and the stud works great...however, on such a small knife, it's easy to manipulate the stud to open the blade b/c of the small radius when opening...on larger blades, sometimes you have to position your hand funny in order to get leverage on the thumb stud..and then you need to regrip the knife in order for your thumb to be able to reach all the way to push the stud/blade all the way open...

With my AFCK, I stick my thumbnail in the hole, and flick - no need for contact the whole way.

I haven't used any other knives with the stud in the handle, but I imagine they may be one answer to the dilema.

Holes are the cat's meouw in so far as my opinion goes.

I really like the thumb hole.

And fast. Just ask someone who is familiar with the drop open deploy to show you how fast. Faster than an automatic.

Holes are it. Thumbstuds and Discs are fine, and they get the job done, but for me the Hole has it.

Elegant

Inherently Ambidextrous

Facilitating Two Deployment Methods

Larger, therefor easier to hit under stress.

I really like the Axis lock, but no Axis with hole, so, no buy.

have spydies
will travel...

I prefer buttons, too!

But that aside...

Studs! All light action knifes (such as the liner lock or ArcLock) can be flicked out nicely by a stud. This is my preferred opening method. And Kershaws' Speed Safe!

You don't need a button for that one.

A quick flick on the stud, one step, and the blade is OUT!

But my BM 705 opens (and closes) so smoothly and effortlessly, it doesn't need a hole. It's the only knife I own with a stud that I can say that about and that includes my sebenza. If fact, you don't even need the stud to open it.

Still, I'd love to see my dream folder, sebbie blade, hole opener, axis lock. Sigh...
