...so I was talking with Mace Vitale this morning, and I tried to explain my sanding clamp system, and I'm pretty sure I did a bad job. I decided that I'd take a smear of pictures and post them, showing the stuff I use to waste steel, time, sanding and grinding supplies, and having a thoroughly good time in the process.

Tell me what you think!

Shop Stuff

I have to add that almost all of the steel used to make things was graciously given to me by my pal Joe, who allows me to garbage pick through the scrap pile of his fabrication shop.

Matt,

That's nice setup you have there. I like the cord wrap on your Sanding Stick of Death and cousin Limpie, a la Fogg? :D

Nice setup Matt. Excellent job on that forge. I like your sanding setup too.

Very nice, Matt. beautiful forge. The anvil has character and one wonders about its tales of the years.

I am happy you didn't call your friend Mr. Limpie. ;)

Thanks gang!

Larry, Mr. Fogg's, of course, look more like priceless Japanese implements... but it was all in attempting to emulate it!

George, there's no hope you'll ever be Irish, so you'll just have to settle for a 'reduced-intelligence' bloodline like, say, Portugese? :D Remember, when an Irishman looks for intelligent conversation from an equal, he talks to God!

Dick, I can't wait to come out and use YOUR stuff!:D Do you need me to bring anything, btw? Materials, music, food, whiskey and hookers?

Mr. Fitzgerald, 'Limpie' is so named because, being 1/8" stock, there's enough flex to surface a convex grind. Mr. Limpie is still capable of providing the most incredible seven seconds of a woman's life!;) :D

Matt - no hammer-in is complete without food, whiskey and hookers. Bring some. :)

Matt, you are very well set up by the looks of it! I know, we could all use more toys, right? :D Thanks for sharing the pics! It's always inspiring to me to see what others are using. -Matt-

Matt, You explained it just fine......thats just what I thought it would look like.
Nice looking set-up you got going on. Only thing is...it's WAY to clean!!!!:D
Now I'm gonna have to get you down here to tidy up my shop!
Mace

No prob, bud...I'll bring the sweeping compound!:D

...it also proves that I can do something in the shop!:D

Cool!! I love seeing the tools. Loving that fuller tool. I gotta make me one of those.

YEP!!! Those hooker's and knifemaker follower's are just down to one.:( :( I really hope Mace can make them all??? Sure in hell his BUTT is big enough to cover it. HEHEHEHEHEHE!!!

If you are lazy like me, you can make a hand sanding setup with a Riverside Moran vice and a scrap pice of 118 x 1 1/2 x 1/4 inch 1075. I use a piece of scrap leather or duct tape to cushion the bottom side of the blade.

Got a picture of what you're talking about? I think I know what you mean, but I'd like to know for sure!

put Moran vice in regular vice, take your blade and the bar of steel and hold them together and stick them in the Moran vice and tighten it down....voila!!!! bar becomes rigid surface to hold your blade. I put duct tpe on the bar to protct the finish and use a pieceof scrp leather on top if I put a finished portion of the blade in the Moran vice. Another forumite suggested using Windex as a wet sanding lubricant and it seems to work pretty well. For a sanding "bar", I just use a 12 x1 x1/4 brass bar. When I need a more flexible sander, I wrap sandpaper around one of those 3M sanding sponges or just use my thumb.

That's what I thought you meant... I was doing that previous to making this platform. That method certainly works, but the difference in rigidity using this square tubing makes it MUCH more effective, for me!
