I found the stuff sack for my bivy bag the other day and tried to put my bag back into it. As hard and tight as I rolled it, it was impossible to put back in. The same is true for my Wiggy's bag. If I work really hard at it I can still get my Thermarest pad in its sack. Do you ever wonder how they do it at the factory, like use a 100,000 pound press to stuff it in and then pull the drawcords tight and ship it out. Anyone else had this annoying problem?

Are you supposed to roll it?

I've had a couple of sleeping bags where the correct method was to 'stuff' the bag in the stuffsack - not to roll it first.

I know what you mean though, I have a thermarest too. It does take some effort. If you are supposed to roll your bivvy bag, good luck!

I always stuff things into the sack. I read an article that said if you roll or fold it you put stress in the same places each time whereas if you just push it in you don't. The article was geared towards tents but I'd think the same applies to other items.

I don't seem to have any problem getting the Thermarests back in their sacks.

I just stuff my wiggy's bags back into their stuff sacks. Never tried to roll or fold them up. Only complaint i have on the wiggy's stuff sacks are the horrible cord locks on the more recent ones i bought (3 ish years ago) versus the nice locks that came on the ones i bought 6 years ago. They don't hold at all when you bring them down to secure sack closed and you need to wrap the cord around it to get it to hold. Not trying to sidetrack this thread but i felt it was stuff sack related.

:D

I picked up a new Thermarest and getting the pad backinto the stuff sack is a beast! Even after deflating and squeezing out as much air as possible, it's still a chore.

Picked up a few Snug Pack stuff sacks which I think are some of the better ones out there. The nice thing, is that you can be a size bigger to make stuffing it easier, and then you can crank down on the compress straps to decrease the packing size significantly. Sure, it's a few ounces more, but worth the ease.

Snugpak is the worst when it comes to this, it generally takes 10 minutes to get the damn bag into the bag.

I meant the construction of the stuff sack...I just bought a bigger size for another bag and it works like a charm.

To all you guys with the Thermarest problem: Tell your wives/gf's/small children to pack them up themselves. :p

Seriously though...I work at Academy and have to deal with these different packs alot. They are called 'stuff sacks' for a reason. Just shove it...

Gee... I stuff my bivy, my sleeping bag, and my therm-a-rest in their stuff sacks often. They take a bit of effort, but none have ever actually given me trouble. I think it's a matter of practice.
