My brother has come to me and asked what he should get. He has $100 to spend and is pretty new to the bushcraft/survival thing. He wants a knife and "essentials" as he calls them. I assume firestarters, things of that nature. I told him some things but also said i would post a thread here as well for you all to help out.

Thanks

There is a thread here about gifts for a brother in law's birthday where the poster is considering getting his brother in law a "bushcraft starter kit" that consists of a mora knife, firesteel and the book bushcraft by Mors Korchanski (I hope I spelled that right) this seemed to me like a great starter kit and I think it came in under 50 bucks.

That leaves enough money for gas to get to the woods.

Bens Backwoods has a couple of assembled kits that he sells for about 70 bucks. They include a mora (choice of 510 or #1), brunton compass, firesteel, fresnal lens, 90 feet of 550 cord and a zebra billy can. He could then upgrade to a JRE leather sheath with firesteel loop and still be under $100. Or he could add some sort of other gear, maybe a waterproof match case and some matches and a capsule to hold PJCBs. I think this would be a great way to start.

My copy of bushcraft will hopefully show up today, but from the reviews I've seen that would be a good addition to one of Ben's kits as well.

I hadn't noticed that, sorry. I would say it is still a good guide.
If I had 100 bucks for a gear set up I would go with (prices are estimates)

Mora ($15 bucks)
guyot or kleen kanteen ($25)
compass ($10)
waterproof matches ($5)
firesteel ($15)
Capsule for PJCBs ($5)
space blanket ($5)
some 550 cord ($5)
whistle ($5)
used copy of bushcraft ($10 on amazon)

This of course does not factor in shipping costs, but this is how I would do it.

And a 14" tramontina.:thumbup: That should be enough to get someones feet wet. Chris

35 mm film canister works great for the PJ cotton balls. Save the 5 on the capsule. You can get them just for asking at places that develop film like WalMart etc. I like the clear ones that Fuji film comes in. You can see what is in it and th caps seem to fit a bit better on those.

Well - it was fun doing a little fantasy shopping at Ben's Backwoods. Here is my list:

1) Jarvenpaa 4" pukko - $45.00
2) Shelter/poncho (56" x 90") - $30.00
3) LMF Army Firesteel - $15.00
4) Stainless canteen cup - $8.00
5) U.S. Military Canteen - $3.00

Sorry - you will have to lend your brother $1.00 + postage.
