Stuff you can still take on an airplane...

Since I am going to be flying in a couple days, I was thinking of what I could pack in my carry on.

Can you guys think of any useful or cool things that we are still allowed to fly with? Even if there is no use to have it on the plane -thats okay. I usually fly with only carry on, but for this trip I am packing a bunch of knives.

Here is what I have though of so far that we can still carry on:

Paracord
flashlight
first aid stuff -no liquids
empty water bottle (to fill inside)
whistle
fatwood (if only for the smell:D)
fire steel (not sure if that is okay:confused:)

What else?
Anyone have experience flying with widgy bars? they seem like a gray area.

bic or similar lighter (no "torch" lighters)

one book of safety matches are allowed as carry on (can't be strike anywhere)

scissors w/ blade under 4" in length

if they decide a widgy bar is a crow bar- then not allowed

I've flown with a widgy. They even dug through my bag since they thought my space blankets and guyot bottle looked strange on the scanner. Pulled it right out of my bag, looked at it, tossed it back in. Even though I put a real thin edge on the end. I used it later to open a bag of peanuts. :D

Firesteel is fine (at least it has been for me many times) Chances are the TSA inspectors would not know what it was if you separated it from the striker.

TSA says: One book of safety (non-strike anywhere) matches are permitted as carry-on items.

Your widgy bar would be considers a crowbar I think and are NOT permitted as carry-on.

I fly to South-East Asia often and I feel safe with the items you listed plus a medium sized screwdriver - the overall length cannot be more than 7 inches. You would be surprised how handy a large flat blade screwdriver (slightly modified) can be!

Check this out for more information:

Have a safe trip! Enjoy.

Essential air travel survival items foe me are:
3 good books, at least one written by an insane/alcoholic person
Mp3 player with 2 sets of earbuds
gun/hunting/knife magazine (gets you some good looks)
Solid metal pen.
flashlight
eyes to watch people doing silly things in the airport
patience

Oh yeah I forgot to mention in 2007 I got onto Thai airways with a machete strapped to my backpack and they let me on! (I had been in the jungle for weeks on little prop planes & just got used to having it on me)

I flew to Laos where they finally made me put it in checked baggage.
I will take a pic of it and put it on here. Nothing fancy - just something a villager gave me when I was in the Issan region.

I always worry about my knitting needles but they've never been questioned, even my Addi Turbo circle needles. Though it probably helps that I always have a project on them.

I'm sure you can see the potential harm these could cause in the wrong hands, like knitted underwear and stuff.

I bet you could carry a little packet of triple antibiotic and some cotton balls along with your firesteel. Don't forget your HeatSheet and metal cup or bottle as well. Tom Hanks never had it so good . . .

The one time I've flown comercially in my adult life, I replace the SAK on my keyring with a swiss tech and although the security guys gave it a good once over, they kinda chuckled, gave me a nod and waved me on.

I've flown with a widgy bar (micro). A few times, when questioned I would say it was a bottle opener. No further questions. Once I started putting it on my key ring I havent been stopped.

I fly a lot.
So far no concerns over the ResQme.
Had a small roll of duct-tape confiscated in Dubai once, it made me laugh.
Paracord probably would be taken as well, though I haven't tried it.
Other items that are OK: Signal mirror, whistle, flashlights, fresnel lense, Tinder-quick, fire-steel, really stout steel-body ballpoint pen, 1-st aid kit (no sharps).

water purification tabs (I put them in My FAK with other meds)

Swiss-tech makes several bladeless multi tools that will get through, security. They are Fairly inexpensive and often in costco, walmart, priceclub etc this time of year in multi packs.

I also pack a pair of EMT shears, these strike a ferro for niceley and can cut better than most knives, for many tasks.

A tall tube sock full of about fifteen dollars worth of loose quarters. Haven't had a problem yet. Also, I got some flint arrowheads through coming back from Texas. I thought I'd put them in the checked stuff, but there they were when i unpacked...

You guys shouldn't list the items you've sneaked on. There may be visitors on this site and others taking notes to use against us.
