stump anvil?

ok I want to try smithing a couple knives from rr spikes, but i lack an anvil. I was wondering I can use a hardwood stump? like oak. if not ill get a piece rr track.
 
Hard wood won't work too good for you. It's too soft and keeps catching on fire. Apiece of rail will work fine. Good luck!
