I have been looking around for some small pocket size stun guns, not the type that shoot wires. problem is, i don't know anything about the brands / levels of voltage etc. So what brands should i look into? also, what do you guys think of a stun gun as a non lethal option?

Most are unsafe junk that are barely worth keeping around to scramble your computer circuits. By Unsafe, I mean they have simple little on/off buttons that mean you can't actually carry them around in a pocket, unless you enjoy getting a buzz.

I prefer my guns in .45ACP or .40SW as opposed to stun. But to keep with the OPs question, if you insist on less-lethal choices many of the expert opinions I have read recommend strong pepper spray for SD. For a extremely informal example, I recall an episode of Jackass where Johnny Knoxville had himself purposely stunned, tased and pepper sprayed and he said the spray was by far the most painful out of the three.

I was thinking pepper spray might go off in my pocket, but now that i think of it a tazer would be a lot worse:eek:

OC is gonna have a safety mechanism that pretty much keeps it from going off. As far as stun guns, drop the $400 and get the Taser C2. It's the real deal, not a stun gun.

Stun guns are contact weapons that generate pain while they are in contact with the other individual. That's it. Unlike TV and Movies, folks do not drop to the ground or become unconscious.
Mostly, they get mad...
I too would much prefer the pepper-spray.

The civilian Taser is a one-shot weapon...If you get a solid hit with both darts, you're likely golden. If not....It's not of much account as an impact weapon.

Check state laws first ! If your life is in danger the "less than lethal weapons " are not a good choice . Be serious and carry a gun if possible .

while i agree in a way if the person asking isnt willing to use lethal force sometimes carrying can put you in more trouble then you started with...if it was me though, a ruger sp101 in .357 i dont trust the fancy toys to save my neck :)

Stunguns have a couple of uses for Self Defense. If you have someone you care about that will absolutely not hurt someone, give them the best stun-gun you can find and hope that their attacker is not a fighter and gets scared off easily.

Otherwise, for someone who does know how to fight, it can be a less damaging option when dealing with someone you might have to otherwise seriously hurt. I've been in situations where I saw a fight coming that I was very worried I was going to have to hurt the person. I would have loved a stun gun at that point.

As a serious deterrent. It leaves a lot to be desired.

Rule 1 of self defense: Don't allow yourself to get into the position where you need it.

Rule 2 of self defense: If you find you've ignored Rule 1, don't allow yourself to get within arms reach.

Obvious answer: Pepper spray.

Also research local laws on the penalty for using such a device. In many states the charge is the same as if you shot them with a gun. In which case a gun is a far better defense tool.

forget about stunguns they are next to worthless, a taser is another story though they seem to work fairly well, imho a can of OC is 10X as effective as most any stungun.

allright, stunguns are Out. i would go for a CCW permit and a gun, but i'm under 21. (Hey that rhymes..) and want to get some training first. (safety course, etc) that's why i want something non-lethal, so pepper spray it is. thanks for all the input guys!

I've personally used pepper spray 4-5 times, and the department as a whole considerably more than that. In each case, the individual being sprayed stopped what he was doing (resisting) and gave up.
Of course, we are concerned with arresting this individual.

From a civilian standpoint, all you really need to do after spraying an attacker is leave, and an attacker who is essentially blind is unlikely to follow you. There are guys who will tell you that bad, mean people can "fight through" the pepper spray, (and if you're already in grappling mode I can see that) but for the most part it's going to be "spray and depart."

One plus for a stun gun is that just the sound alone tends to scare the hell out of dogs.
