Stun guns?

Ok, so I've decided I want a stun gun. No particular reason. I won't be carrying it or using it for self defense. I just want to own one. Maybe just 'cause the government says I can't. But that's another issue.

I did a search and found a few threads on here which indicate that Bladeforums members have a generally low opinion of stun guns. What apparently objective information I found through Google basically said that a typical stun gun wont knock someone down or really disable them until you've given them a good five seconds of juice. I can see where that would make it less than ideal for a defensive situation, but ... I still want one.

So ... can anyone here tell me anything about stun guns?

Acknowledging their limitations, is there one brand that's better than others (staying under $100)? Any brands to specifically avoid?

100000, 200000 ... 650000 volts - how much is enough? What would be excessive, or not worth paying more for? Does it really make a difference? Though I don't plan to use it, I'd like to think I'm in possession of something with optimum stopping power.

Are there any Taser style ones that shoot out wires with barbs on them for under $200? Or are the official Taser ones, at $300+, the only ones like that?

Anyway, if I'm going to get something like this, I'd like it to be high quality, with solid construction. Something nice, as a collectors item, to store with the illegal switchblades and balisongs I don't own. Any suggestions or comments at all would be most appreciated.

when my best bud shocked himself for a count of 3 on his chest for a beer (one, not a 6 pack, lol) i lost all interest in stunguns, they just dont work, imho, check out the rodney king tape, the taser didnt seem to work on him, i guess if ya just want one for the sake of having it, cool, i would get a taser myself, i guess, if i wanted to collect the things.

when i did security in a C&W bar in the early 90's, we all carried a nova stun gun, i dont remember anyone ever actually using one though, it was through this that my bud discovered once ya get by the crackle noise, they arent real scary, and he got lots of free beer, lol

but in real life, lots of stuff works better/is cheaper, ie OC spray for one.

just my .02 worth

My brother stuck me with a stungun in the back a few years ago for a laugh  I think it was 25000 volts but it could of been more. I'm just an average sized bloke and I was only wearing a shirt and I didnt feel a thing. I did end up with what looked like to little burn marks on my skin but nothing on my shirt. Wierd. Good scare factor though. Gang of lads tried to mug him once, he pulled out the gun and crackled it once and they all beat a very hasty retreat. Personally I'd say there completely useless things.

Search Practical Tactical for details on the tests we did.

The only practical use for it is as a party toy, and for that I think the cheapest one you can find will work as well as any.

Wait -- there is one more use for them. I was told by an expert dog trainer that if you shock a dog with one he'll give you a funny look and move away from you. If that's a practical use....

Ok, now I'm bummed ... :(

I figured there had to be SOME KIND of stun gun that actually worked! I mean, Tasers work (well enough, anyway), and the premise of them is simple enough. Why aren't there any other stun guns that are designed to have the same voltage/amperage ratio as Tasers? I don't want or need something that shoots darts, just a contact one.

Given what I've read so far, I'm gonna give up on the idea of getting a stun gun until I find something that people will agree REALLY works.

In my searching, I found some plans for how to build your own stun gun - it's pretty simple really. Maybe I'll read up a bit and see if I can custom make one to do what I want. I'd probably end up frying myself though ... ah well.

The advertising for most of them claims "this one is different," "works on a completely different principle" etc. because it's too generally known "stun guns" don't work. None of them are different; they're all the same.

The way I understand the circuitry works, the voltage in actual use depends on the resistance it encounters -- the capacitors build up charge until it overcomes the resistance. (That also determines the frequency of shocks. They slow down as they eat batteries.) So a brand that claims "up to" more voltage than another brand might be able to produce its useless shock with more resistance from heavy clothing than another. That is not an advantage.

They eat batteries very rapidly, especially if used as a party toy. Get a charger and a lot of rechargeables.
