So I wasn't sure exactly how to phrase this but I'll explain. Is it common for people go certain places and not bring their expensive knives? I am thinking along the line of a busse or sebenza vs. a cold steel or SOG. Are there situations or places you would not bring the higher end knife for fear or loss or theft and take the CS or SOG instead?

I don't bring my Leek to work because I'm afraid I'll break it doing something stupid like using it as a prybar. :o

Is that the kind of thing you mean? Otherwise, I've always tried to put all of my knives to use - whether it's a beat-up SAK or a new Kershaw or whatever. That said, I don't use knives that would be considered really expensive, so take from that what you will...

Well either way it still sucks to have a good knife break or get lost. But yeah I switch out from my really good edc knives, to my lower end knives when going to work at various job sites where they can be dropped 60 to 80 feet plus onto the pavement, or wind up loaning it out to somebody else that would use it as a prybar ect.

right now im trying to find a good blade to have as a less expensive alternate to my sebenza since i sold all my cheaper ones to get it...im thinking a paramilitary at the moment...

the paramilitary isn't exactly a cheap knife. take a look at the Delica or Endura.

I believe the term the OP is looking for is street beater. Mine is my flash 1, $35 on amazon, not a pretty knife but it's inexpensive and gets the job done. I hate the handle on it but the price is right.

had both...not looking for a cheap knife...just one thats not $300+...

If your looking for a beater knife i would just get an opinel no.8 for about 7 bucks...the carbon ones take a wicked sharp edge...

Other than flying I can't think of any, all my expensive knives are bought to use. :)

When I fly I bring lesser knives (checked in luggage) to avoid theft of more expensive knives.

When I swim or workout I carry relatively inexpensive H1 knives but if there were more expensive examples using H1, I would probably use them.

I did as you suggested when I was much younger and harder on my knives than they deserved.I now EDC good quality blades and do not abuse them,if the NEED arose to do so it would be a matter of life or death and I would prefer to 'abuse' a good blade rather than a pos that would let be down.Hope that is a answer that you can understand ?.

Thanks for the replies. I like the street beater title. And I understand Ankerson, I did not necesarily mean I would be afraid to use them cause knives are tools to be used. I was thinking more similar to what johhny mayhem was saying. I ask because I have a sog seal pup elite and I am betting ready to get my first busse. I was wondering if there will be situations where the seal pup may be prefered for what ever reason.

I can definitely see what you mean now. I'd definitely be a bit worried about losing something as expensive as a Busse, so if you were in some situation where there might be a risk of losing your knife and being unable to retrieve it, I don't think anyone would fault you for grabbing the less expensive knife

If I had a Busse and planned on using it hard, I'd definitely not shy away from using and abusing the sucker :D, but I'd think twice about packing it if I thought there was a serious risk of losing it. For example I might pack a less expensive knife on a canoeing trip than I would on a hiking trip, just because I'd be paranoid about losing a really expensive knife in the drink .

yeah, well see; that's exactly the thing with owning high end stuff.
a great majority of users simply think of a knife as a tool and use it accordingly.
however, the lines are redrawn once an ordinary knife user steps up to a higher calling and becomes a knife collector of sorts.
it hurts to see your baby stolen or worst yet, ruined through useage.
"handle with care" is the catch phrase with anything that's been paid out from your own pockets, me thinks.
but i guess the same can be said of anything that's been carried out on the streets.
for instance, an expensive watch, sneekers, cell phone or and sometimes a little too much cash in the wallet perhaps.
nobody knows when tragedy will strike, but like anything, there's always a 50/50 chance for anything and everything to happen.

I was feeling pretty good about my SOGs and CS knives as being my high end blades, now...... :(

(FYI, I do use thm is most situations. I am, however, a little to easy on my opinels. I love those cheep little buggers so much that I'm afraid I'll kill them. I guess I need to put a little faith in them.)

I think he means in checked baggage. I would hesitate to trust a Sebenza or Zero Tolerance to baggage thieves handlers myself. Maybe a SAK, for utility when I got where I was going.

In New York City, I would only take a SAK or other slipjoint, maybe a Spyderco UKPK, because law enforcement is insane when it comes to knives.

When it comes to losing or abusing a knife, I find that the more expensive or valuable a possession is to me, the more careful I am with it. I can lose or give away a Bic, but my good pens, no.
