Stupid freaking latches...

Hmm, sounds like a plan.

My dad happens to have access to tools of all shapes and sizes... I'd have to trust him to do a good job though... at any rate, I'll keep you all updated and I'll post some (blurry ass) pics once its done. Of course... I need a BM42 first...

I don't have a 42 so I can't see if thats true... I thought the theory behind there being a latch gate in both handles is because the same mold is used for both handles. Why would they take the time to make the safe handle with an uneven latch gate? Especially since a latchgate in the safe handle is quite useless!

Here are pics to support my claim:

Just take the 1" mark and make that the starting point, you can see that the bite handle is (roughly) 3/8" and the safe handle is (roughly) 1/4". Hope this helps anybody who is deciding whether or not to "cut off" the ends of the 42's handles.

Cameron, nice pictures.

If you are very carefull, and only remove up to the latchgate with out removing any of the latchgate on the the latch handle, and then on the other handle remove the same amount(say 11/32 of an inch) you should be okay. The end will be thicker on what used to be the latch handle, but that shouldn't be a problem. It would be a job for a professional if you ask me.

My other concern would be the holes would not be centered in the handle correctly any longer. It might look funny.

Thanks Cameron.

This is all very hard when I don't even have a 42!

Count down from the 1" mark half an inch. It looks to me like, at one time, both latch gates where identical and that the gate in the latch handle has been trimmed down 1/8". If the safe handle's gate were also trimmed down 1/8" it should become even and might work...
