I have a paypal account, just a normal one. No problems until someone wants to pay me with a credit card, from Canada.

It looks like I need to update my account to accept credit cards, so that3% fee is that going to be charged to me from here on out for ALL future, even non credit card, payemnts?

And BTW I have looked on their site but I just don't get it, sorry.

Thanks

That's not a stupid question, it's one that has faced most of us who use Paypal. Supposedly, for upgrading your account, you get extra services like being able to accept credit card payment. For that Paypal charges you the fee. Unfortunately for me and many others, the rest of the services aren't worth the fee, but that credit card one is a biggie, so most sign up anyway. That's why a lot of sellers won't accept credit cards through Paypal, they did the research (as I should have done) and decided that it was not worth it to upgrade.

I just found that accepting payment from Canada constitutes a "cross border" transaction and the fee is $0.30 + 3.9%. They ding you and extra point for that priviledge.

I think its a bargain for the convenience of being able to accept a payment for an item and have the money instantly from anyone, anywhere. I don't mind paying a little extra for convneience,,,,like not crossing traffic to save a nickel on gas. :D

I agree with Phillip here. From my relatively extensive experience with PayPal (over 500 transactions), the convenience has been more than worth the cost.

While I haven't had the misfortune of getting scammed by them myself (yet) I would like to point out the negative experience of others (people allegedly scammed out of hundreds of dollars), posted in this very forum: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=336813

Caveat emptor, even if you think that incidents described at http://www.paypalsucks.com could never happen to you for some reason.

Imo,,Paypal has not "scammed" anyone. Paypal offers a service that has allowed countless transactions to take place between willing buyers and sellers all over the world that would have never happened without it. I've only had to contact Paypal once concerning a problem and they handled it promptly. I would say that it's important to read, understand and follow all of Paypals policies.

I gotta agree with notdos.I've been using paypal for a long time now and have not been Scammed or had Any bad experiences to date.Every transaction has gone smoothly.

As a Seller:
I hate PAYPAL fees so in all my auctions (and sales) I point out that I only accept Personal Paypal accounts. Course this means I can't accept credit cards.

Naturally, it's hard to do business like that. So, I created a second PAYPAL account and made it a Premier one so I could accept cards. I only tell a buyer about it if the price on the knife is high enough to handle the added expense and he's hesitant to mail cash.

As a buyer:
When I only had a Personal account I once paid for an item and the seller skipped town. I filed a complaint and Paypal could only get about a third of the money back. I was pist. I called my bank and they said they couldn't do anything because the money had come out of my checking account.

So, I created another PAYPAL account, tied it to my credit card (which means I had to make it a Premier account) and now I only use that one to pay with. Because it's a Credit card I can file a claim with them if PAYPAL doesn't come thru.

Yes, it's a PITA and it has it's drawbacks. For one thing, when someone pays to my Premier account I can't get the money transferred for free (Cha Ching, another fee). For another, my personal account can only accept $500 a month so I have to time my sales around that.

I agree that paying thru PAYPAL simplifies things when dealing with people you don't know but if there's a way I can beat their fees I'm going to take as much advantage as I can.

I had great service, until I got screwed when a seller didn't send the merchandise, and then closed my account when I got debited from my account. They had a loyal customer, not any more.
