Stupid or Cool... You decide!
Experimenting with different finishes. So before spending a bunch of time and effort to develop the technique, need your opinion.
Does this Look Cool:cool:
or
Stupid:barf:
This will be very helpful so don't hold back...

Love how that looks. I'm not a fan of big choils but whatever floats your boat. I do like the coating style though

Looks very tactitool, so on big cleavers, choppers and other big knives it would look great. I wouldn't do it on a small slicer though.

It adds an interesting effect but does not really suit my taste aesthetically. It would go well with an Argyle sweater though:foot:
At any rate I hesititate to call anything stupid just because it isn't my style.
Is there a texture to the finish or is it smooth?

Hey AK, I voted nay, but I don't think it's stupid either. Just not my cup-o-sushi. You're the important one.

Take care, Craig

I voted stupid, but it's really not that bad (you needed a third option) -- while not to my taste (a nice, simple solid dark etch would be more my thing), the part I don't like is that it almost totally wipes out your grind lines - the eye is so distracted that your blade basically disappears behind the pattern.

I like it. Did you use the old fishnet trick like body finishers use for snakeskin looks?

I didn't vote, cause you didn't have an option for "cool, but not my cup of tea." It looks very "tacticool" which is great for a lot of people, but I'm into more rustic knives.

I also agree with Zerogee--the finish obscures what LOOKS like a very well-done grind. You might try doing the finish only on the flats of the blade, leaving the grind clean. THAT would look cool, IMO.

well generally on my stainless blades i dont like a coating but on stainable steels i like a coating. i think the grid pattern looks nice. what steel is it?

I said stupid as it wouldn't be something I would pick up, but I know some people will like it. Reminds me of something I would see at the mall "knife" store (mall ninja?) but bravo for trying something different.

I voted cool because it's cool that you tried something new.

Could we get the scoop on what kind of steel, what kind of coating, is there a white/grey coating behind the black coating?

800x300 is kinda grainy, I can't tell if it's bare steel behind it.

I also think coating on a SS blade is just another cost raiser unless it happens to be cosmetic and not black/grey/brown/olive drab.

I think it would look cool if the bevel of the blade looked regular and then the rest of the blade had this finish. This is all assuming you're only grinding half way up or so on the blade. Overall I think it would look good on a tactical or fighter knife.

The idea behind it is to kinda confuse the eye...
So if it makes you look past it and washes out the lines a little it has done its job.
Steel is 1095 with a 2000 grit top finish...
I am not a great photographer but in person it has very distinct grind lines. The finish dulls that flash of steel you see when a knife is drawn.

I kinda like the blade shape, it's a nice departure from the usual, although probably not something I would buy. I'm iffy on the coating, cool idea but maybe a different pattern for that type of blade, not so formal. The grinds are nice (mine are still embarrassing), although a swedge on the first top curve would look sweet. The only thing I don't like (and it may just be the camera angle) is that the handle looks kinda blocky. Overall I vote cool

I voted COOL, but to me it doesn't fit the blade style you've applied it on.
I think it would be cool on folders and small pocket fixed blades

After looking at it again I see where the design might be better suited to a fancy knife, instead of a user.
Thats why it takes a different set of eyes to see these things.
This is my first try at this on a proto blade anyway. Thats why the handle is so plain, it will get beaten up soon.
Suggestions for a User Combat/Tacticool design are welcome...Tell me you would like to see.
